When the Church celebrates Pentecost on May 24, 2026, she commemorates not merely a historical moment, but the living fulfillment of Christ’s promise: to pour out the Holy Spirit upon the world.

Pentecost is fire, breath, mission, and birth. Yet, at its deepest level, Pentecost flows from a Heart... the pierced, loving Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart and the feast of Pentecost are not parallel devotions moving in separate lanes of Catholic life. They converge at the core of Christian revelation. As St. Pope John Paul II taught, everything God wished to reveal about His love is made visible in the Heart of Christ, a Heart that continues to pour itself out through the Holy Spirit. The Sacred Heart: The Human Revelation of Divine Love

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that Jesus “has loved us all with a human heart,” and that the Sacred Heart, pierced for our salvation, is “the chief sign and symbol” of Christ’s enduring love for the Father and for all humanity (CCC 478). St. John Paul II explained this mystery with striking clarity:

Pentecost transforms frightened disciples into bold witnesses precisely because they are anchored in the love revealed in Christ’s Heart. The Spirit does not replace Christ’s love; He makes it present and active in history.

The Church Born from the Heart

The Catechism describes Pentecost as the moment when the Church is fully revealed, and her mission begins (CCC 731–732). But this mission is not bureaucratic or ideological. It is relational. It flows from the Heart of Christ, shared with the world. St. John Paul II often spoke of the Church as learning again to “rest her head upon the Lord’s chest,” echoing St. John at the Last Supper. Devotion to the Sacred Heart trains the Church to remain close to the source of her life, so that Pentecost is not a one‑day anniversary but a perpetual state of being sent. Remember the 11th Promise Jesus gave to us: “Those who propagate (help promote) this devotion shall have their name written in My Heart, and it shall never be effaced.”

Pentecost on May 24, 2026: A Call to Live from the Heart

Celebrating Pentecost on May 24, 2026, the Church is invited not only to recall tongues of fire, but to return to the Heart from which the fire flows. In a world marked by fear, division, and spiritual fatigue, the Sacred Heart offers what Pentecost alone can sustain: forgiveness, unity, and mission rooted in love.

The Catechism reminds us that through the Spirit, we receive the very life of the Trinity and are empowered to bear “the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace…” (CCC 736). For many Christian denominations, particularly within the Catholic Church, the Feast of the Ascension represents one of the most significant moments in the liturgical calendar.

In 2026, this feast falls on Thursday, May 14th. Beyond being a date on the calendar, why is it considered a Holy Day of Obligation?

To understand its weight, we must look at both the biblical narrative and the theological promise it holds for the faithful.

The Biblical Foundation

The Ascension marks the moment, forty days after His Resurrection, when Jesus Christ ascended bodily into heaven in the presence of His apostles. As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (1:9):

"When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight."

This event is not merely a departure or a conclusion to Jesus’ earthly ministry. Rather, it is the entrance of humanity into the divine realm. By ascending, Christ did not leave His followers behind; He went to “prepare a place” for them -revealing that the gates of heaven are open.

Scripture reveals that God’s love carries maternal imagery: “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13). Jesus Himself speaks with this same tenderness, longing to gather His people as a mother hen gathers her young (Matthew 23:37).

Men of the Sacred Hearts is blessed to walk alongside men answering God’s call... Deacon Charles “Charley” Bemiss is a powerful example of that journey in action.

Twelve altar boys from St. Isaac Catholic School assist in procession with Deacon Charles and Fr. Joe Barron.

Charles Bemiss is a Configuration III Seminarian at Sacred Heart Major Seminary and a Man of the Sacred Hearts. He will be ordained a priest in May 2027.

Deacon Charley joined the Men of the Sacred Hearts “A Team” last year when he was sent to St. Andrews for his summer internship with Fr. Brian and Fr. Joe.

Charley was a natural in the home visit ceremony, where we help families Enthrone the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the home (interested? Learn more here ).

The Men of the Sacred Hearts support the journey, and Deacon Charley is one of those men. We look forward to seeing him again this summer, knowing he will bring the same inspiration his predecessor, Deacon Jim Musgrave, brought to families. We have also had the pleasure of hosting Father Pat Bruen and Father Ben Schroder, who worked with us a few years ago.

Oh, look at the altar boys in the photo! There were 12 of 14 - I lost count as they processed down the aisle with Deacon Charles and Father Joe Barron from St. Isaac Jogues in St. Clair Shores. All the boys attend St. Isaac Catholic School. They were so well trained in incense and candles they could have served for the Pope.

Deacon Charley returned to his home parish after being ordained a deacon on April 11 to preach his first homily. It was a grand slam home run. No wonder Fr. Joe Barron wanted Deacon Charley back - to show the potential that a middle school altar server can aspire to.

The Annunciation is the pivotal moment

When God’s plan of salvation moves from promise to embodied reality: the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive and bear Jesus, the Son of the Most High.

Historical Context

This event, narrated in Luke 1:26-38, marks the Incarnation, God becoming man through the free assent of a human person , and is celebrated liturgically on March 25.

Luke’s narrative situates the Annunciation in a precise historical and theological frame: Gabriel is sent in the sixth month (linking to the earlier annunciation to Zechariah), appears in Nazareth to Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph of David’s house, and greets her as “favored,” with the Lord present.

The angel announces that she will conceive a son named Jesus, who will be called Son of the Most High and inherit David’s throne. Mary asks how this can be since she is a virgin, and Gabriel explains that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the power of the Most High will overshadow her. Mary’s response, her fiat, her yes, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word," is the human assent that makes the Incarnation possible.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church treats the Annunciation as the moment when the Word assumed human nature and the beginning of the Church’s redemptive history. Remember, we think she was 14 or 15 years old when this happened to her. Perhaps there was fear, as she was yet a single young lady, and the culture of the time did not look kindly on pregnant unmarried maidens.

What was she going to tell her parents and Joseph?

The Incarnation as personal union

At the Annunciation, the Son of God assumes a human nature in Mary’s womb without ceasing to be divine; this union of natures in one Person is the heart of Christology.

Mary’s free consent

The Catechism stresses that Mary’s fiat is not passive resignation but an active, free cooperation with God’s will; her assent models human cooperation with grace.

Role of the Holy Spirit

Luke and the Catechism both highlight the Spirit’s action - overshadowing Mary - linking creation’s first act (the Spirit over the waters) with the new creation begun in Christ.

Fulfillment of promise

Writing about St. Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Mother, is a challenge to capture the " eloquent silence " of a man who never uttered a word in the New Testament.

Yet, his presence is the cornerstone upon which the Holy Family, and by extension, the theology of the domestic church... rests.

Joseph holds a unique dual title: Patron of the Universal Church and Saint Joseph the Worker.

To understand his importance, we have to look at how he balanced the unrealistic responsibility of guarding the Son of God with the gritty, splinter-filled reality of a first-century carpenter.

The Theology of Presence: The Husband of Mary

In the context of salvation history, Joseph’s role as the husband of the Blessed Mother is often viewed as "supportiv e," but it was fundamentally, revolutionary .

The Guardian of the Mystery

When Joseph discovered that Mary was with child, he faced a crisis of faith and of the law. In a world of rigid social structures, his decision to take her into his home - prompted by a dream - was an act of radical obedience to God. He became the "Chaste Guardian of the Virgin." His importance here isn't just about protection; it's about legitimacy. By marrying Mary, Joseph legally established Jesus as a member of the Line of David, fulfilling the messianic prophecies.

The Model of Masculine Virtue

Joseph redefines "strength." In the modern era, we often mistake volume for power. Joseph, however, is powerful because he is disciplined. He protected his wife during a harrowing flight to Egypt and navigated the anxieties of a displaced refugee family. His relationship with Mary was one of total self-gift, providing a blueprint for what a "holy marriage" looks like: a partnership built on a shared mission rather than mere emotional satisfaction.

Saint Joseph the Worker: the Sanctification of the Ordinary

In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worke r on May 1st. This wasn't just a calendar update; it was a profound statement on the dignity of human labor.

The Carpenter’s Gospel

We often gloss over the fact that Jesus was known as "the carpenter's son." For thirty years, the vast majority of his life, the Savior of the world was a blue-collar apprentice.

Labor as Prayer: Joseph taught us that work is not a curse or a necessary evil to fund our "real" lives. Instead, work is a participation in God’s ongoing creation. Whether he was carving a beam or fixing a door, Joseph did so with the same devotion he used in prayer.
The School of Nazareth: It was Joseph’s calloused hands that taught Jesus how to hold a tool, how to measure accurately, and how to deal fairly with customers. Joseph’s "importance" lies in the fact that God the Father chose this man as the earthly mirror of His own fatherhood.

Breaking the "Sacred/Secular" Divide

Saint Joseph the Worker reminds us that there is no wall between the sanctuary and the workshop. If the man who raised God spent his days covered in sawdust, then our own mundane tasks... sending emails, washing dishes, or paving roads... carry a hidden, divine weight. I remember the phrase “honest work,” which meant working with your hands or your back. I remember that the culture in the late 1990s was that you should strive to get a college degree rather than work with your hands.

St. Joseph shows us that there is honor, not shame, in doing honest work.

Young men and women entering trades such as electrician, masonry, and plumbing are beginning their careers, earning up to $ 70,000 a year. As we all know, not all young people are cut out for college.

The Patron of a Happy Death and Modern Relevance

Why does Joseph matter in 2026? Perhaps more than ever. He is the patron of the "hidden life." In a world obsessed with "likes," "shares," and public recognition, Joseph represents the value of being known by God alone.

The "Shadow of the Father"

The Polish author Jan Dobraczyński famously called Joseph the "Shadow of the Father." This captures his essence perfectly. A shadow doesn't exist for itself; it follows the movement of the light. Joseph’s entire life was a shadow of the Heavenly Father's care for humanity.

His importance lies in his availability. He was a man of action, not words. Every time God asked him to move - to take Mary as his wife, to flee to Egypt, to return to Nazareth - the Gospel tells us "he rose and did so." No debate, no hesitation.

Final Reflection

Saint Joseph the Worker and the Husband of Mary stand as the bridge between the Old and New Testaments. He is the last of the Patriarchs and the first of the Saints to recognize Christ. He proves that you don't need a platform, a title, or a single recorded quote to change the course of history. You simply need to show up, do the work, and love the family God has placed in your care.

Those who want to follow St. Joseph’s quiet ways learn to work hard without complaining, work smart without bragging, and work fairly without overcharging or asking for more. Set the example, simile, and stay in a state of prayer as your work.

Wisdom, Stuff & a True Story

I often think that Jesus put that little drama together for me to show that lots of money and lots of stuff are just that, stuff.

Now on to my story...

When I was younger and not very aware of life's importance, I often wished I could win the Lottery. Millions of $ for fun, pleasure, and squandering on foolish things.

As I got older, I became friends with people who had what I would call serious money. I saw and heard something different from what I had imagined their lives to be like. One comment that almost always surfaced was that they always had “lots of friends,” and most of them wanted something from you. Another common comment from those who had “summer homes” and “winter homes” was that getting people to do maintenance on the homes or be cardtakers was always a problem. Some of the summer homes in Charlevoix or Harbor Springs were the size of small hotels, and if the bathroom shower was not leaking into the kitchen below, the AC was not working well. Always something to fix.

The winter homes in South Florida on the ocean that were condos had this rebar rot from the salt air, which caused a serious structural problem that required tearing up the floors inside the units and replacing the rebar support steel rods. That was not covered by insurance or the HOA. Always something to fix.

On one occasion, while I was sitting on the patio, sipping a cold one with my well-to-do friend and looking out at Lake Michigan on an August day, the conversation turned personal. My friend just said he was happier when he was poor.

Let that sink in for a minute.

This guy began working in high school and was from a lower-middle-class home and neighborhood. No silver spoon here, my friends. But he worked hard and was an empire builder, with multiple successful businesses. But now in his early 50’s, he missed the simple life of just having enough.

In 1 Kings 3-9, Solomon asked God for wisdom in a dream at Gibeon. He requested “an understanding heart to judge the Jewish people,” and that he could discern between good and evil. This took place shortly after his Father died, leaving the Kingdom to this young teen. He could have asked for riches, long life, and dominion over his adversaries, but he instead pleased the Lord by asking for the wisdom to rule God’s people.

I always found this a profound biblical story.

A true story from my checkered past: I was doing business in Puerto Rico, and on Friday afternoon, it looked like the project we were working on was going to take longer than expected, so I let my company driver go with my plans to take a taxi back to the other side of the island (about an hour or more drive).

The taxi showed up, and we began the slow drive back to San Juan, where I was to catch a plane home. As we drove around the island, I looked out at the ocean, enjoying the view. The driver asked if we could talk, and as I was in his cab, I said sure. He asked me what I was looking at. I replied that I was looking at the poor people living in wooden shipping containers. He looked at me in the rear-view mirror and asked if he could tell me what he saw. Again, I’m in his cab, and I really was not interested in what he saw, but I did not wish to offend. “Sure”.

He kept eye contact with me as he drove, and I wished he would keep his eyes on the road, but apparently, it was a skill he had. He began by asking me to look at the men who had returned from fishing in the ocean, cleaning the fish and preparing the fires in 55-gallon drums converted into driftwood grills. And did I see the women have returned from the market where they sold baskets woven from seaweed that day and bought vegetables and fruit along with wine for the meal. And did I see the children running and playing while music could be heard playing from a radio?

He then said that what I saw as poor was actually rich, for these poor people were living a life of plenty from the bounty of God’s earth. We, however, were stuck in a stinking-hot cab (no AC) in traffic, and I was going to travel back to Detroit that night, arriving at who knows what late hour in a suit and tie.

Silence… then he asked yet another question. Why aren’t we on the beach cooking fish and vegetables, listening to music, and drinking wine on a Friday night?

I often think that Jesus put that little drama together for me to show that lots of money and lots of stuff are just that, stuff.

You know what is important. If your family has faith, health and peace, you have the important things in life.

On Palm Sunday, the Gospels record Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem riding a donkey, greeted by crowds waving palm branches and shouting “Hosanna.” The event appears in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–10; Luke 19:29–40; John 12:12–19), where the detail of the donkey (or a colt) is emphasized as part of a deliberate, prophetic action.

This moment is the hinge that begins Holy Week: a public, visible claim about who Jesus is and what his mission will be.

For Catholics, the narrative is read not only as history but as a theologically charged sign, an enacted prophecy that points backward to Scripture and forward to the Paschal mystery.

Jesus’ choice of a donkey directly evokes Zechariah 9:9, which promises a king who comes “righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey.”

The verse calls the people to rejoice as the King brings salvation, opening with the words, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.” By entering Jerusalem in this way, Jesus intentionally identifies himself with the messianic hope of Israel while redefining what messianic kingship will look like. This is not a claim to earthly domination but a public enactment of a prophetic script that reframes power as service and salvation as humility.

The crowd’s acclamation. calling him “Son of David” and shouting blessings, shows that many onlookers understood the entry in messianic terms. Yet, the Gospels portray these expectations in tension with Jesus’ later passion, forcing readers to confront the difference between popular expectation an d the cross-shaped reality of God’s saving work. They wanted a king; t hey received a Savior.

A king is short-term, but the Savior is for eternity.

The fact that Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey was itself a powerful statement: I am not the kind of king you desire, but I am a king after God’s heart. In many ways, this is why Jesus Christ was ultimately killed. He was not always palatable, liked, or accepted by the people. He challenged the norms of the time—the expectations of political power, the rigidity of certain religious structures, and the comfort of the status quo.

The donkey symbolizes humility and peace, in contrast to a war horse that would signal military conquest. By choosing a beast of burden rather than a stallion, Jesus models a kingship rooted in service and vulnerability. Catholic theology reads this as a decisive moment in which the nature of Christ’s reign... suffering love that conquers through self-gift, is made visible.

This paradox... king and servant, triumph and humility... becomes a catechetical tool. It teaches that true authority for the Christian is not coercive control but sacrificial love . The donkey, then, is not merely a quaint detail; it is a theological emblem that encapsulates the Gospel’s reversal of worldly values.

Palm Sunday inaugurates Holy Week in Catholic liturgy, and the procession with palms reenacts the crowd’s welcome. The ritual invites the faithful to enter the same tension the Gospel narrates: to acclaim Christ while preparing to accompany him to the cross. The palms themselves recall victory, but the victory celebrated is the Paschal victory - life through death - so the liturgy trains believers to see triumph through the lens of sacrifice.

Pastorally, the donkey entry offers a model for Christian leadership and discipleship . Priests, catechists, and lay leaders are reminded that authority in the Church is exercised in service, not domination. The procession and readings provide a yearly opportunity to reflect on how the community welcomes Christ and how it must be ready to follow him into the difficult realities of repentance, reconciliation, and self-giving love.

Jesus’ instructions to his disciples to fetch the donkey, “The Lord needs it,” turn a private act into a public sign. The entry is not merely symbolic; it is a prophetic performance. In the prophetic tradition, actions speak as loudly as words; Jesus’ arrival on a donkey is a deliberate, public claim that invites interpretation and response. For Catholics, this underscores the incarnational character of revelation: God acts in history, and those actions carry theological meaning.

Because the entry is public, it also exposes the fragility of human response. The same crowd that cries “Hosanna” will, within days, be swayed by other voices. The narrative thus becomes a sober reminder about the fickleness of popular opinion and the cost of discipleship when the Gospel’s demands run counter to social expectations.

Every element of the scene carries symbolic weight.

Palms signify victory and honor.
Cloaks spread on the road recall royal homage.
The road itself, often read as the path to Jerusalem’s temple, becomes the path to the cross.

Together, these signs form a compact drama: the people’s gestures anticipate a conventional royal entry, but the outcome will invert that expectation. Catholic reflection reads these layers as an invitation to see sacramental meaning in ordinary signs and to recognize how God’s kingdom subverts worldly categories.

Palm Sunday is a communal memory that shapes Christian identity. Each year, the Church reenacts the entry to recall who Christ is and what following him entails. The donkey’s presence in that memory keeps the Church from mistaking spectacle for salvation; it insists that the center of Christian life is the Paschal mystery - Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection - rather than political triumph. Good Friday is one of the most solemn days of the year. The Church requires fasting and abstinence as a concrete way to unite ourselves with Christ’s Passion and to practice true repentance.

Penance and turning back to God are consistently linked with fasting in Scripture. The prophets call Israel to return to the Lord with fasting (Joel 2:12; Jer 18:11; Ez 18:30). Jesus Himself begins His ministry with the call to repentance (Mt 4:17). Jesus teaches that His disciples will fast after His departure (Lk 5:35). The early Church connects repentance, conversion, and fasting (Acts 2:38). The Catholic Church identifies fasting and abstinence as part of the “necessary minimum” for spiritual growth (CCC 2041).

Good Friday is an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics aged 18–59 (fasting) and 14+ (abstinence).

The Church encourages extending the Good Friday fast into Holy Saturday as a “Paschal fast” to prepare for the Resurrection.

Fasting sharpens our spiritual focus, expresses sorrow for our sins, unites us with Christ’s suffering on the Cross, and prepares us to celebrate Easter with renewed hearts.

Why Catholics Should Go to Confession Before Easter

Confession before Easter is not just a tradition, but a profound preparation for the Resurrection.

Biblical foundations

Jesus gives the apostles the authority to forgive sins (Jn 20:22–23).

“And with that, he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.’”

In these verses, Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection and breathes on them, telling them to receive the Holy Spirit. This moment is significant because it marks the beginning of the disciples’ empowerment through the Holy Spirit. Through this act, Jesus imparts not only a gift but also a mission. The instruction about forgiveness shows the authority Jesus gives to his followers. They are entrusted with a vital role in sharing God’s love and grace through the act of forgiveness, emphasizing that forgiveness is a central aspect of the Christian faith.

Repentance and conversion are essential to entering new life in Christ (Acts 2:38).

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Catechism teaching

The Catholic Church requires confession of serious sins at least once a year (CCC 2042), and Lent is the natural time to fulfill this. Catholic confession restores us to sanctifying grace, which is necessary to receive the Eucharist worthily at Easter. Remember, only the Catholic Church has the Eucharist - the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ. “Communion” in a non-Catholic church is a remembrance.

The sacrament reconciles us with God and the Church, heals spiritual wounds, and strengthens us against future sin.

Give a full confession without excuses about why you sinned. Jesus already knows the truth, and He needs you to admit that you made this mistake knowing it was wrong. This is supposed to be hard, so that you don’t do it again.

Why before Easter specifically?

Easter renews our baptismal promises, and confession prepares the soul to make those promises sincerely. The Church urges the faithful to be spiritually ready for the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter) - the holiest days of the year. Confession allows us to enter Easter Sunday - April 5, 2026 - with a clean heart, free from the burden of sin.

Ash Wednesday occupies a unique space in the Catholic tradition. It is a day of paradox, a "public" display of "private" repentance.

As outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) and echoed by contemporary voices like Bishop Robert Barron , Ash Wednesday is not merely a somber tradition; it is the "sacramental" doorway into the desert of Lent, a 40-Day spiritual journey mirroring Jesus’ time in the desert while fasting and praying.

1. Memento Mori: The Theology of Dust

The primary symbol of the day is, of course, the imposition of ashes. The minister traces a cross on the forehead while uttering one of two formulas. The traditional call, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return," points directly back to Genesis 3:19. Memento mori is Latin, meaning that you must die.

The Catechism’s Perspective: The CCC emphasizes the gravity of our fallen state. In paragraph 1018 , it reminds us that "as a consequence of sin, man must suffer 'bodily death, from which man would have been immune had he not sinned.'" Ash Wednesday forces a confrontation with this reality. It strips away the illusions of secular "immortality" - our wealth, our status, and our physical health - and reminds us that, biologically and physically, we are fragile.

Bishop Barron’s Insight: Bishop Barron often speaks of this as a "healthy detachment." He notes that we spend most of our lives "agonizingly preoccupied with our own egos." By wearing ashes, we publicly admit that our egos are destined for the grave. This is not morbid; it’s liberating. When we accept our mortality, we stop trying to find ultimate satisfaction in things that cannot last, such as collecting stuff and living a sinful life.

2. Metanoia: A Change of Mind and Heart

The second formula used during the imposition is: "Repent and believe in the Gospel." This highlights the Greek concept of metanoia , which literally means "going beyond the mind you have."

The Catechism on Penance: The CCC describes interior repentance as a "radical reorientation of our whole life, a return, a conversion to God with all our heart" ( CCC 1431 ). Ash Wednesday is the catalyst for this reorientation. It is the Church’s way of saying that "business as usual" is not enough. This is the perfect time to begin planning for you and your family to schedule the date for confession. Most churches make multiple days and evenings available for this visit to a priest who will hear your confession and give you an easy penance.

The Call to Interiority: The Catechism is careful to note that outward symbols (like ashes) are "meaningless" without an internal shift. Paragraph 1430 states:

"Jesus' call to conversion and penance... does not aim first at outward works... but at the conversion of the heart, interior conversion."

3. The Three Pillars: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving

The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday (Matthew 6) sets the tactical manual for the Lenten season. The Church identifies three specific practices to facilitate this "metanoia."

Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving work together to reorient the heart toward God and others.

Through prayer , we reconnect with God as our true source, humbly confronting pride and self-sufficiency.
Fasting intentionally creates a holy hunger for God, training us to master our desires and loosen the grip of sensuality and gluttony.
Almsgiving turns us outward to recognize Christ in our neighbor, healing greed and unhealthy attachment by cultivating generosity and love.

Bishop Barron on Fasting: Barron frequently highlights that fasting is not about "denying the goodness of food," but about "re-ordering our desires." By feeling physical hunger on Ash Wednesday, we are reminded that "Man does not live on bread alone." It is a spiritual exercise in "willpower" that prepares us for the more difficult task of resisting sin. We are used to giving in to our immediate “hunger” for a snack or other “thing” that may be undesirable and not good for us. Gambling, adultery, drugs or porn are Satan’s tools to take us away from God. Lent is one of God’s tools for bringing us back through forgiveness.

 4. The Communal Dimension of Sin and Grace

A significant aspect of Ash Wednesday is its public nature. While the Gospel warns against "performing for men," the Church also recognizes that sin is never purely private.

CCC 1440 explains that sin "entails the setting of oneself against God's love... it also damages communion with the Church." Therefore, the public wearing of ashes is a communal admission of guilt. We stand in line together—the priest, the layperson, the saint, and the sinner—acknowledging that we are all "in the same boat." We are a broken people in need of a Savior.

5. The Goal: The Easter Fire

Ash Wednesday cannot be understood in isolation. It is the beginning of a trajectory that ends at the Empty Tomb.

As Bishop Barron beautifully articulates, the "ashes" of Wednesday are only significant because they will eventually be washed away by the "water" of the Easter Vigil. The cross of ash on the forehead is a shadow of the cross of Chrism received at Baptism. We go into the "dust" of Lent so that we might be fit to share in the "glory" of the Resurrection. So wear the smear of ashes proudly and hold your head up high to show the world that you, a true Christian Catholic, are not afraid to confess your sins to the priest who is acting in persona Christi (in the person of Christ). The priest does not forgive sins on his own authority but acts as a divine channel of mercy, reconciling the sinner with God.

My first reconciliation was on my sailboat in the middle of Lake St. Clair with my wife's cousin, a newly ordained priest. My gosh, it was humiliating, but it was supposed to be. Shame about my behavior was part of the transformation from sinner to a better man, not quite a saint, but a saint want to be. After my absolution, I felt like a 50-pound rock had been lifted off my back.

The CCC's Final Word on Lent: The Catechism notes that by the solemn forty days of Lent, the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert ( CCC 540 ). Ash Wednesday is our "Amen" to that invitation. It is the moment we step out of the frantic pace of the world and into the quiet, demanding, and ultimately life-giving silence of God.

Summary of Significance

Ash Wednesday serves as a "spiritual reset button." It provides:

Truth: An honest look at our mortality.
Humility: A public acknowledgement of our need for God.
Action: A concrete commitment to the three pillars of Lenten discipline.

By starting with the "dust," the Catholic Church ensures that, when Easter arrives, the joy is not a cheap sentimentality but a hard-won victory over the death we acknowledged six weeks earlier, sacrifices.

"We were having a great year in 2008. Our sales were up 20%, and we had just negotiated with two other businesses to join our team.

Then, in late 2008, as we all know, the economy fell apart, and by the end of 2009 I wasn’t sure we could stay in business. We were having trouble meeting our financial obligations. I cut my salary down to minimum wage. I had one child in college and another just starting. All of a sudden, I was drowning in debt.

I was discussing my situation in a small men’s group that we had just started, and

one of the guys suggested that I enthrone my business to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I had faith and f igured I had nothing to lose. I called John La Vasco, and he quickly made time to come out and oversee the ceremony. I invited many people to join us - people from our church, customers, and all of our employees. Honestly, it was a little uncomfortable displaying my faith in front of that many people and affirming that Jesus would be the CEO of our company. I was deeply moved by how many people showed up. It turned out to be a real blessing to have so many people praying for and supporting the business.

Slowly, things began to turn around. Our main supplier gave us extra time to pay our bills, which allowed us to get caught up with smaller suppliers. After a while, we were able to chip away at some of the debt as well. Little by little, people started coming back to work, and we noticed the business had changed in the process. We began selling more office furniture as people moved into smaller spaces and found they could afford new items because of their savings on rent.

I renewed my consecration every year , not necessarily with a big crowd of people, but with our employees. It was voluntary for them to come, and many of them were not Catholic, but I know they respected the values that Christianity has. We were able to pay off our debt and the business recovered. Several years later, I did a consecration to Jesus through Mary. Between these two consecrations, some significant changes came about in my business, which really began to thrive, and eventually led to the sale of the business to two key employees. Nine years later, I still work there and they share the same values. Jeff and Anna have had their business consecrated twice as well.

I highly encourage everyone to consecrate your business to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Sacred Heart of Jesus. Doing this Is not a guarantee of success financially, but if you take the consecration seriously, I firmly believe that you will lead a better, happier life directed by the Holy Spirit."

Clearly, young adults are returning to the Church, while older Baby Boomers are leaving.

In a Lifestyle article (November 16, 2025) by Kirsten Fleming, she reports that New York City Catholic churches are seeing soaring numbers of young adult converts, according to local priests.

A few testimonies stand out:

Fr. Teller, OP, from St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village, reports that the number of young people converting to Catholicism has tripled since last year—roughly 130 people.
St. Vincent Ferrer on the Upper East Side reports that 90 people have signed up to convert.
The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral has doubled its headcount, with 100 people entering the Church. Its Sunday 7:00 PM Mass is now overcrowded.
The Diocese of Brooklyn has welcomed 538 adults into the Church since 2023.

“My generation is watching things fall apart,” s aid Kiegan Lenihan, who is currently in instruction to become Catholic at St. Joseph’s. “When things all seem to be going wrong in greater society, maybe organized religion isn’t that bad.”

A recent college graduate, Ian Burns, 22, said he was drawn to Catholicism for several reasons, including the “turmoil in the world.” He added, “I felt like I needed something to lean on.”

Is it possible that our young people are seeing the value and joy of being Catholic more clearly than their parents or grandparents? While news stations highlight protests on college campuses, we must remember that not the entire student body is burning the American flag or destroying property.

In a Google search survey of 1,000 college students , I learned that fewer than 37% of students actively protest or plan to protest. A separate survey found that only 19% of students have participated in or plan to participate in demonstrations or walkouts supporting Palestine. Statistically, a nationwide survey of 1,000 people is likely skewed toward large metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City.

An interesting thought: I once participated in a high school walkout - not to protest an issue, but simply to get out of class on a warm May afternoon. I went to Stony Creek to swim.

On the other hand, a decline in religious service attendance of all kinds is evident. According to Gallup, the share of Americans who say religion is an important part of their daily life fell from 66% to 49% between 2005 and 2015. Worldwide, however, an average of 83% of adults say religion is important in their daily lives.

Perhaps the problem in America is our wealth and health. I shudder when I think of a young father I met at the Dream Cruise on Saturday, standing with his four-year-old son, telling me they did not need God. When your stomach is full and you have cash to burn in your pocket, what is there to pray for?

The young adults highlighted in this New York City article seem to believe the world they are about to step into is in serious trouble. Meanwhile, we see citizens aged 40 to 80 protesting in wild costumes and burning anything in sight - acts that appear driven largely by anger.

Maybe this is what is stirring young hearts to seek something firmer, truer, and eternal.

The Most Misunderstood Silence In the Entire Mass

The choir may still be singing.

Some people are already thinking about going home.

Others are checking the time.

But spiritually, this is one of the deepest moments of the entire Mass.

It is the silence after Communion.

And it is often misunderstood.

THIS SILENCE IS NOT EMPTY

After Communion, the Church does something very deliberate.

She becomes quiet.

Not because nothing is happening, but because **everything has already happened.

At this moment:

- Christ has entered your body

- Heaven has touched your soul

- The Sacrifice has been received personally

Words are no longer enough.

WHY THE CHURCH DOES NOT RUSH THIS MOMENT

Before Communion, we pray, speak, sing, and respond.

After Communion, the Church steps back.

Why?

Because God is now closer to you than your own breath.

This is not the time for many words.

This is the time for presence.

Just like lovers sit quietly together, just like a child rests silently in a parent’s arms,

the soul now rests in Christ.

WHAT IS REALLY HAPPENING IN THAT SILENCE

In that quiet moment:

- Grace is settling into the soul

- Healing is taking place

- Strength is being poured invisibly

- Christ is communing with you from within

This is not symbolic.

You have received the Living God.

The Church knows this is too sacred to disturb.

WHY MANY PEOPLE MISS IT

We live in a noisy world.

Silence feels uncomfortable.

Stillness feels strange.

So people fill the moment with thoughts, movement, distractions.

But the Church is inviting something deeper:

“Stay. Listen. Let Me love you.”

THIS SILENCE IS YOUR PERSONAL HOLY GROUND

The altar is holy.

But after Communion, you are the altar.

Christ dwells in you.

That silence is not for boredom.

It is for intimacy.

It is the moment when Heaven whispers instead of speaks.

SO ,

Do not rush the silence after Communion.

Do not break it too quickly.

Remain.

Breathe.

Adore.

Because in that stillness,

the God you have received

is finishing His work in your soul.

And silence…

is the only response worthy of that mystery.

John & Sarah's Home Enthronement ~ Testimony

"I really wanted to tell you this in person, but I just have to say how many heartwarming moments we have had as a family again since having mother Mary here..." -Sarah

John and Sarah had invited several men to their home last December, and the experience was so rewarding that they rebooked several of the men to return at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday for prayer. Sarah was advised that about 4 or 5 of us would be showing up.

About The Men of the Sacred Hearts: established in Detroit since 1964, this group has 45 volunteers, mostly men, who take the statue of Our Lady of Fatima (each team has a statue) to homes by appointment. Our Rochester Team works on a general call out to the brothers (what we call ourselves), and whoever can make it shows up. In 2024, John and Sarah welcomed 3 or 4 of us into their home.

Sarah was surprised when 11 of us stood on their porch in the snow, carrying the statue and a bag of supplies. Sarah pulled me aside as we filed in, I was one of the last, and she said, “I don’t think I have enough food, Dave!” We joked that perhaps Our Lord would perform another multiplication-of-loaves miracle and save the day.

Our Detroit Teams experienced a tragic decline in membership participation when COVID-19 hit, and we suffered for about 3 years without enough volunteers to visit homes requesting our services. But slowly we began to attract new members. Our Lake Orion team serves a large Latino community, and we have two men who came to the USA years ago from Mexico and would now like to begin a Spanish team. We are going to supply a Our Lady of Guadalupe statue for this team, who will serve the Spanish-speaking community in their area. We have another Chaldean team forming, which came from our Troy team. The leader is a Chaldean Deacon and is well known in the area.

It is a blessing to be financially stable and grow our volunteer base during a time of what we have been writing about, the rebirth of Catholic Faith with younger adults with large families. Some of these families came from parents who walked away from their Catholic faith. But these young people felt something was missing from their abundant lives: God.

When we gathered in Sarah’s kitchen, where the food was laid out, our men took plates and began loading them with potato pancakes, blueberry muffins, and fruit. I went last. There was still food in the serving dishes, fruit in the large serving bowl, and 5 or 6 muffins left. Someone had cut the muffins into quarters, and that helped. Sarah and I winked at each other, knowing that God always provides.

Families who have invited us into their homes comment that the experience is a faith-filled blessing for their family. The Intercessory Prayer (praying for the individual) elicits deep, meaningful prayer intentions from parents and children alike. Siblings have prayed for each other to change their behavior or direction in life.

Spouses have prayed for each other's problems, such as addictions and sinful habits. It is usually a very pleasant experience, but sometimes it can become a venting session about family matters, and it always ends well by the time we leave. Of course, we never discuss the family problems with others, as this was between Jesus and the family.

Our team members feel they were called to help in this ministry.

We feel blessed and humbled to give up our Saturdays for Jesus.

Sarah's Testimony:

"I really wanted to tell you this in person, but I just have to say how many heartwarming moments we have had as a family again since having mother Mary here.

Noah was downstairs in the basement watching TV and I told him that the rosary was going to start and he came flying upstairs and was ready to go sit down and pray. It’s very hard to get him upstairs once he’s down there, but all I had to do was mention that we were going to say the rosary and he came flying up the stairs.

When we were praying the rosary live through relevant radio last night, Noah whispered to me that this is his favorite time of the day. Before it started, he passed out holy water to all of us which melted our hearts. The other day Christian had a lot of tests to study for and he’s been behind in his classes because he was out sick earlier this month so there was a lot of catching up to do. He was concerned and when he came down and prayed afterwards, he said that he felt a lot better.

The other night when I was gone, John, Christian and Noah were watching a Christmas movie and it was almost time for bed and Noah reminded them that they needed to go pray with Mother Mary so they went and did that. I absolutely love having her here with us when I was wondering how much these statues cost because I feel like we need one here! Please pray for my party tonight that it’s very much filled with peace and prayer and happiness.

Welcome to a fun look at how faith is like football!

Faith, much like the game, works best when we understand the rules, respect the boundaries, and remember we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

There are Ten Commandments, and we’re going to explore how each one relates to football, in no particular order.

The Second Commandment

Let’s start with some background.

God gave Moses the Ten Commandments to serve as a moral foundation for His people. The Israelites had just been freed from slavery in Egypt and were stepping into a new life as a free nation. Like any community, they needed structure - guidelines to help them live peacefully, justly, and in right relationship with one another.

Surrounded by pagan nations, so me of them ruthless, God’s desire was clear: Love God. Love your neighbor. Live in a way that reflects who you belong to.

Football works the same way.

A football game without rules would be chaos. The field has lines. The teams have assignments. The officials enforce boundaries so the game can be played fairly and safely. The rules aren’t there to ruin the game - they make the game possible.

Encroachment and Respecting the Line

If you’ve ever watched football, you’ve probably seen encroachment . That’s when a defensive player jumps over the line before the ball is snapped and makes contact with the offensive player. The referee throws a yellow flag, blows the whistle, announces the number, and the penalty is five yards.

Encroachment is crossing a line that isn’t yours to cross.

We see it outside of football too. Maybe it’s your spouse taking 70% of the bed and leaving you with 30%. Or the driver in the lane that’s ending who speeds ahead and cuts in at the last second - using a turn signal as if that somehow makes it acceptable. In those cases, there’s no referee, no whistle, and no yellow flag… just a test of patience. Sometimes accepting the 30% is simply a form of penance.

Football is a physical game. Players expect to get hit. They understand the contact, and there are usually no hard feelings when it happens within the rules. But crossing the line - encroachment - comes with consequences.

Faith Has Boundaries Too

The 2nd Commandment teaches us: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”

At its core, this commandment is about respect - respect for God and for the people around us. Using God’s name casually or in vulgar language offends Him and often offends others as well, even if they don’t say it out loud.

I once had a close friend I played golf with. Like many golfers, he struggled when a brand-new golf ball found the middle of a pond. But his frustration often included using the Lord’s name in vain... something he didn’t do off the course.

Because I loved him like a brother, I brought it to his attention privately. At first, he didn’t believe me. So we agreed on a simple signal: if I heard it, I’d itch my nose. Within five minutes, it happened. When he noticed the signal, he stopped, came over, hugged me, and said, “Thank you. I didn’t realize I was using my Lord’s name that way.”

That’s not judgment, that’s accountability.

That’s teammates helping one another play better.

Our Witness Matters

Some people think this commandment is silly or insignificant. But words matter. Once spoken, they can’t be taken back.

I remember a group of men finishing lunch after having too much to drink. Their language became loud, crude, and included the Lord’s name in vain, while families with children sat nearby. These men were recognizable members of their parish. Their witness that day spoke louder than they probably realized.

My mother used to say two things:

You cannot take back spoken words.
A bad reputation sticks like skunk stench - you can’t wash it off.

Playing Our Position Well

Like football, faith is not a solo sport. We all have a role to play, and how we act affects the whole team.

Today, you and I have a role to play with every person we encounter.
May I be a positive influence.
May I respect the lines.
And may I live my faith in a way that honors God, on the field and off.

Jesus and I on the Road

A story to help us understand why Jesus had to be born to the poorest of the poor.

I had to work the Wednesday before Thanksgiving that year.

My wife and kids had gone up north the day before to celebrate with the whole family. I finally finished my project and groaned when I looked at the clock. It was 5:20 PM, already dark... going-to-snow dark.

Good planning, buddy, I thought.

The car was filled with gas and my things were loaded in the cargo area. I got on I-75 northbound at M-59 with half of Michigan as my traveling partners - or, more accurately, competitors. The battle for the left fast lane was brutal, so I settled into the middle lane and followed traffic at a leisurely pace.

I began thinking about Christ and His birth in what was likely a filthy stable.

My father’s family were farmers, and I knew what a stable looked and smelled like. Then I wondered why He had to come to us poor and not of royalty.

I must have drifted off mentally, because suddenly I realized I was already in Flint. I shook my head and thought maybe I needed to stop for coffee, but I pressed on.

It began to snow... big, wet flakes that melted (thank God) as they hit the pavement. Even so, it was close to a whiteout. We all slowed down, except those in the far-left lane who kept going at a reckless pace.

The snow was mesmerizing as I listened to Mannheim Steamroller Christmas on Pandora.

As I stared ahead, I had the strange sensation that someone was sitting in the passenger seat. I glanced over and froze.

The music had stopped.

Jesus was looking at me with a smile on His holy face. The Holy Spirit must have taken over the steering wheel, because I kept driving while I stared at Him, unsure what to do. I wondered whether I had been in a terrible accident and died. Jesus told me no - I was fine.

Have you ever wondered what you would say to Jesus if you had the chance?

In many conversations with my prayer buddies, I had always assumed my first words would be, “My Lord, have mercy on me!” Instead, what came out was, “What are you doing here?” Not exactly the greeting I had envisioned.

Still smiling, He answered, “I’m here to answer your questions about why I had to come into the world as a humble, poor boy. Perhaps you can return your attention to the road while I explain.”

“But why me, my Lord?”

“But why not you, my son?” He replied. “Let me begin, and feel free to ask whatever questions you have.”

Almost whispering, I asked, “Okay… did You really get born in a stable and placed in a manger?”

“Yes. The image of my birth is mostly accurate. There was no room anywhere. But that was My Father’s plan from the beginning. It was not an accident, it was perfectly timed and purposeful. My Father intended an act of divine humility to save His people.

“It was the divine act of kenosis, or self-emptying. My Apostle Paul describes this astonishing condescension in his letter to the Philippians: ‘Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!’ (Philippians 2:6–8, NIV)

“You see, my son, I was rich in the treasures of Heaven, but poor in earthly family and status.”

I lamented, “But You could have done so much more as the son of a king!”

“No, you’re mistaken. The masses of my people who needed me were poor. And the few who needed me the most were the royalty who held the masses in bondage.

Being the humble son of a carpenter put me in direct contact with the people I came to save... the ones who wanted to be saved, who needed hope and peace. As it says in 2 Corinthians: ‘For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.’ (2 Corinthians 8:9, NIV)

“My birth in poverty symbolized my relinquishing of heavenly glory to embrace the human condition fully, from beginning to end. By choosing to be born into the family of a carpenter, in a humble setting, I identified immediately with the vast majority - the poor, the working class, and the marginalized.”

He continued as I stared ahead at the swirling snowflakes. “Had I been born into a wealthy or powerful family, my message might have seemed exclusive, aimed only at the elite. My poverty demonstrated that God’s salvation is for all people: rich and poor, powerful and insignificant. It also showed that true blessing is not found in material wealth.”

“Yes, but You allowed Yourself to be displayed as an insignificant newborn.”

Jesus took a gentle breath and continued. “Being placed in a feeding trough in a place where animals were kept (Luke 2:7) instantly aligned Me, the King of Kings, with the lowest of society.” Then it dawned on me: Jesus had to come as a nobody to reach the people His miracles were meant for... the lowest, the overlooked. If He had come as the son of a king, performing miracles for lepers and the blind would have been seen only by the wealthy, who did not mingle with the common people. In the ancient world, and even today, wealth was often seen as a sign of divine favor. By being born poor, Jesus challenged that assumption directly. He became the Savior people brought their loved ones to for healing, physical, mental, and spiritual.

I was nodding when I realized I was alone again.

The snow had stopped, and I was just outside West Branch.

I reached over and touched the seat beside me. Was I imagining things, or could I still feel the warmth from His holy presence? Had the conversation been real?

Suddenly I thought of Mary and Joseph, poor Jews, faithful to God and the Law of Moses. How did they manage the journey with their newborn son, Jesus, the Son of God? How do you discipline the Son of God? If He wanted dessert first, how would you tell Him it was better to eat His vegetables?

I thought about Joseph receiving the message in a dream to flee to Egypt with Jesus and Mary. Did he return to Nazareth to pack, or leave directly from Bethlehem? It was a 150-mile, ten-day journey. How did they pack enough food and supplies?

I arrived at my destination full of more questions than answers, waiting for Jesus to return and finish the conversation. But deep down, I knew He had already answered me, by encouraging me to seek the rest in the Holy Scriptures.

The Holy Mass explained to Catalina by Jesus and Mary

Catalina was rushing into the Feast of the Annunciation Mass and was late. The Blessed Mother begins with: “Today is a day of learning for you and I want you to pay close attention because of what you will witness today. Everything that you will experience today, you will have to share with all of humanity.” This is said in a very soft and loving voice.

The Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM): “Why must you always arrive at the last minute?” She is prompting you and I to arrive early for Mass and prepare by reviewing the readings, reflecting on the message, and spending time pondering it.

Penitential Rite

At the Penitential Rite, the BVM wants us all to ask the Lord to forgive our faults that offend Jesus. In doing so, we prepare ourselves to participate worthily in the Holy Mass. This is the time to examine your actions since your last Confession. In Catalina’s testimony, the BVM calls her out for not treating her employee with love and respect and for aggressive behavior while driving. These events occurred after she had gone to Confession the previous evening.

Liturgy of the Word

At the Liturgy of the Word, the BVM wants us all to pay attention to the readings and the homily. “If you really pay attention, something from all that you heard will remain in you.”
“And now, tell the Lord that you are here to listen, that you want Him to speak to your heart today.”

Offertory

At the offertory, Catalina saw “some characters, whom I had not seen before, began to stand up. It was as if from the side of each person present in the Cathedral, another person emerged, and soon the Cathedral became full of young, beautiful people.”

Our Mother said: “Observe. They are the Guardian Angels of each one of the persons who are here. This is the moment in which your guardian angel carries your offerings and petition before the Altar of the Lord. They are the Guardian Angels of the people who are offering this Holy Mass for many intentions, who understand the significance of what is being celebrated. They have something to offer the Lord.”

Other Guardian Angels from people came next, with nothing to offer, they were empty-handed. These angels are from people, “who are here, but never offer anything. They have no interest in living each Liturgical moment of the Mass, and they have no gifts to carry before the Altar of the Lord.”

The Guardian Angels from people who don’t even want to be at the Mass are last. They are very sad, as they have no purpose in the offertory.

Eucharistic Prayer and Consecration

At the Prayer of Thanksgiving (which begins the Eucharistic Prayers - central to the Catholic Mass): “Suddenly everything that was behind the celebrants disappeared. Behind the left side of the Archbishop, thousands of Angels appeared in a diagonal line, small angels, big angels, angels with immense wings, angels with small wings, angels without wings. As the previous ones, all were dressed with tunics like the white robes of the priests or altar boys. Everyone knelt with their hands united in prayer, and bowed their heads in reverence. Beautiful music was heard as if there were many choirs with different voices, all singing in unison together with the people: Holy, Holy, Holy...”

Then came the moment of Consecration – the part of the Mass where the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ:

“The moment of the Consecration, the moment of the most marvelous of Miracles had arrived. Behind the right side of the Archbishop appeared a multitude of people, also in a diagonal line. They were dressed in the same tunic, but in pastel colors of: rose, green, light blue, lilac, yellow, in short, in different and very soft colors. Their faces were also brilliant, full of joy. They all seemed to be the same age. You could note (I can't say why) that they were people of different ages, but their faces looked the same, without wrinkles, happy. They all knelt down as well at the singing of Holy, Holy, Holy Lord...”

Our Lady said: “These are all the Saints and the Blessed of Heaven, and among them are the souls of your relatives who already enjoy the Presence of God.”

Then I saw Her, exactly to the right of the Archbishop, a step behind the celebrant. “She was suspended a little off the floor, kneeling on some very fine, transparent (but at the same time), luminous fabric… as crystalline water. The Holy Virgin, with hands joined, was looking attentively and respectfully at the celebrant.”

She spoke to me from there, but silently, directly to the heart, without looking at me: “It surprises you to see Me standing a little behind Monsignor [the Archbishop], does it not? This is how it should be... With all the love that My Son gives Me, He has not given Me the dignity that He has given the priests of being able to perform the daily Miracle with My hands as they do with their priestly hands. Because of this, I feel a deep respect for priests and for the miracle that God carries out through them, which compels me to kneel here behind them.”

“The celebrant said the words of the Consecration. He was a person of normal height, but suddenly, he began to grow, becoming filled with light, a supernatural light between white and gold that enveloped him and grew very strong around the face. And because of it, I could not see his features. When he raised the Host, I saw his hands, and on the back of his hands, he had some marks from which emanated a great deal of light. It was Jesus! It was Him Who was wrapping His Body around the celebrant, as if He were lovingly surrounding the hands of the Archbishop. At that moment, the Host began to grow and became enormous, and upon it the marvelous face of Jesus appeared looking at His people.”

By instinct, I wanted to bow my head, and Our Lady said: “Do not look down. Look up to view and contemplate Him. Exchange your gaze with His, and repeat the prayer of Fatima: Lord, I believe, I adore, I trust, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not trust, and do not love You. Forgiveness and Mercy... Now tell Him how much you love Him, and pay your homage to the King of Kings.”

Sunday Mass and Why It Matters

Katie was a thoughtful and insightful 8th grader in my Catechism class. During our discussion on the Ten Commandments, we reached the third commandment: “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.” As we talked about the importance of attending Sunday Mass, Katie respectfully shared, “Well, I don’t think my god would hold it against me if I didn’t go to Mass on Sundays.”

Her comment caught the attention of the whole class. I paused, then gently replied, “Katie, I don’t know who your god is, but I’m confident that our God hasn’t made any changes to His commandments.”

That moment stayed with me. It reminded me how common this belief has become – even among those raised in Catholic homes and educated in Catholic schools. I’ve heard similar sentiments from my own family: nephews and brothers I deeply love, who now see Sunday Mass as optional. What used to be a rare absence has, for some, become a complete disconnect from regular Mass attendance.

So how did we get here?

Many people today express a desire for a more personal and spiritual connection to God… sometimes outside the structure of organized religion. For some, the rituals of the Mass can feel distant or outdated. Others may wrestle with aspects of Church teaching or have had painful experiences that led them to step away.

These realities are not to be dismissed lightly. The Church, like any family, has its challenges and moments of needed reform. And yet, at the heart of our faith is something extraordinary: the Eucharist. We believe that Christ is truly present – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity – at every Mass. This is not just a ritual. It’s a real encounter with the living God.

The Church teaches, with love and clarity, that attending Mass on Sundays and holy days is not just a suggestion – it’s an obligation rooted in the Third Commandment. Not because God wants to burden us, but because He longs to be with us, to nourish us through Word and Sacrament, and to draw us into deeper communion with Him and one another.

Still, I’ve learned that it's not my place to judge hearts. Only God sees the full picture of each person’s life. Perhaps someone who doesn’t attend Mass is still striving to live a moral life, while someone else might fulfill their Sunday obligation yet struggle with serious faults in other areas. We’re all on a journey. We all fall short.

My job isn't to judge, but to love. To invite, not to shame. And to keep tending the small part of the world God has entrusted to me, with humility and compassion.

Let’s continue to encourage one another to rediscover the beauty of the Mass and the joy of honoring the Sabbath, not out of fear or guilt, but out of love for a God who never stops calling us home.

Heavenward! The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is August 22, but before the coronation of the Queen of Heaven can begin, she has to be transported from earth to heaven. I have often considered if she was concerned at all. I’m assuming that she trusted her son completely.

The Blessed Virgin Mary must be “assumed” into Heaven, as she is not Divine like her Son. Jesus “ascends” into Heaven.

The Catholic Church celebrates a profound and beautiful truth every August 15th: the Assumption of Mary, body and soul, into heavenly glory. This doctrine, while formally having deep roots in Christian Catholic tradition and finding echoes in both scripture and the living faith of the Church, is beautifully articulated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

What is the Assumption?

Simply put, when Mary's earthly life was over, she was taken up, body and soul, into heaven. It's not about her dying and then being resurrected later (like the general resurrection at the end of time), but rather, a unique privilege granted to her by God. As Paragraph 966 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states: "Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death."

This special grace is intimately connected to Mary's unique role in salvation history. She was the Arc of the New Covenant, the vessel through whom God himself entered the world. Her Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, and her "fiat" (her humble "yes" to God's will) prepared her for this ultimate glorification.

Scriptural Echoes and Theological Foundations

While the Assumption isn't explicitly described in a single biblical passage, its theological foundations are deeply rooted in scriptural themes.

The Woman Clothed with the Sun (Revelation 12:1-2): This powerful imagery of a woman "clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars" giving birth to a male child who is to rule all nations, has long been interpreted by many theologians as a reference to Mary. While allegorical, it speaks to her cosmic significance and ultimate triumph. The "child" is clearly Christ, and the "woman" who gives birth to him and then escapes the dragon's wrath into heaven can be seen as foreshadowing Mary's own ascent.
Enoch and Elijah (Genesis 5:24 & 2 Kings 2:11): The Old Testament offers precedents for individuals being taken up into heaven without experiencing the common fate of death. Enoch "walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away" (Genesis 5:24). Similarly, the prophet Elijah was taken to heaven in a whirlwind by a chariot of fire (2 Kings 2:11). These instances demonstrate God's power to elevate individuals in extraordinary ways, providing a basis for understanding Mary's unique Assumption.
Mary's Sinlessness and Co-Redemption: The Church teaches that Mary was preserved from original sin from the moment of her conception (the Immaculate Conception). Since death is a consequence of sin ( Romans 6:23 : "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord"), it is fitting that Mary, being full of grace and without sin, would not be subject to the decay of the grave. Her close identification with Christ's redemptive work, her "yes" at the Annunciation which initiated the Incarnation, further underscores the fittingness of her Assumption. As CCC 966 further states, her Assumption allows her to be "more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death."

Why is the Assumption Important for Us?

The Assumption of Mary is not merely a historical event; it is a source of immense hope and inspiration for all believers.

A Sign of Hope: Mary's Assumption is the beginning of the general resurrection of the body at the end of time. It shows us what awaits those who are faithful to Christ – the glorious union of body and soul in heaven. As CCC 974 eloquently puts it, "The Most Holy Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death." Her Assumption offers us a glimpse into our ultimate destiny.
Mary, Our Advocate: In heaven, Mary continues her maternal role, interceding for us before her Son. Her Assumption means she is fully alive, body and soul, and therefore able to more perfectly and powerfully intercede on our behalf. As the wedding at Canna shows us, Jesus minds his Mothers suggestions. That is why as Catholics, we place our prayers at the feet of Our Lady, Queen of Heaven so she can ask Her Son to act on our petitions.
The Dignity of the Human Body: The Assumption affirms the goodness and dignity of the human body. It reminds us that our bodies are not merely temporary vessels but are destined for resurrection and eternal glory.

The Assumption of Mary stands as a testament to God's boundless love and his desire to glorify those who serve him faithfully. It is a doctrine that elevates our gaze to heaven, inspiring us to live lives worthy of our ultimate calling, confident in the promise of eternal life with Christ, foreshadowed by the glorious Assumption of His Mother.

Why the Domestic Church is More Vital Than Ever

...it's easy to overlook the foundational unit of faith: the Catholic Domestic Church.

Often defined as the family home where Christian life is first learned and lived, this Catholic Domestic Church isn't just a quaint new idea; it's the beating heart of the faith, and its importance today is more profound than ever.

When we speak of the "Domestic Catholic Church," we're not talking about a separate entity from the parish or the diocese. Instead, it's the church in miniature – the family unit, consecrated by the sacrament of marriage, where parents are the primary educators of their children in the ways of faith. It's where the first prayers are whispered, the first lessons in chastity, charity, and morality are learned, and the very first encounters with God's love for us take place.

So, why is this so critically important in our modern world?

1. The First Catechists: Passing on the Real Teachings of the Catholic Church

In a world saturated with information (and misinformation), the authentic transmission of faith becomes paramount. Parents, under their vocation, are the first and most influential catechists. It's within the home that children learn not just the doctrines, but also the lived reality of what it means to be Catholic – through shared prayer for each other (Intercessory Prayers), acts of service, forgiveness of siblings and parents, and the simple, daily rhythms of a life centered on Christ. This lived experience, modeled by parents, forms a far deeper and more resilient faith than any classroom lesson alone.

2. A Sanctuary in a Secularizing World

As social and cultural pressures and secular ideologies increasingly challenge traditional values, the Catholic Domestic Church offers a vital sanctuary. It's a place where faith can be openly practiced, discussed, and reinforced without fear of judgment. In an often-conflicted public square where the Catholic Church is under constant and sometimes violent attack, the home becomes a haven where children can develop a strong Catholic identity, rooted in love and truth, equipping them to navigate the complexities of the wider world.

3. Cultivating Vocations and Future Generations

The seeds of vocations – to the priesthood, religious life, or holy marriage – are often sown within the Catholic Domestic Church. A home where faith is vibrant, family prayer is habitual, and service for and to each other is encouraged naturally fosters an environment where individuals can hear and respond to God's call. Strong Catholic Domestic Churchs are not just building up individual families; they are building up the future of the entire Church. Often, these families find other families to “hang out” with so their children can be Catholic with other children without fear of ridicule.

4 . The Source of Parish Vitality

A thriving parish is ultimately comprised of thriving Catholic Domestic Churches. When families are actively living out their faith at home, they bring that vitality, enthusiasm, and commitment to the broader parish community. They contribute more actively to liturgy, ministries, and outreach, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire body of Christ.

5. Responding to the "New Evangelization"

Pope John Paul II's call for a "New Evangelization" recognized the need to re-propose the Gospel to those who have already heard it but may have lost their connection. The Catholic Domestic Church is on the front lines of this effort. It's through the witness of Catholic families, living joyful and authentic lives of faith, that the Gospel is most effectively shared and rediscovered, both within their ranks and with those they encounter.

In an era of rapid change and shifting landscapes, the steadfast traditional strength from the Catholic leadership from the Pope to the Parish Priest, creates the foundation that many liberal writers can’t understand, so they belittle and criticize us as “radicals” in an age of swarming seemingly insane adults burning their cities and trying to overthrow our government. While this is happening in real time around us, we “carry on” with our traditional God Based values and virtues within our Domestic Catholic Church.

How to Achieve Peace in Your Family and for Yourself

A sage Italian man once said, “If you have peace and health in your family, you have everything.”

You know how it is when the family is bickering and fighting. The Domestic Church of your home becomes a battleground. Even more damaging is when parents are having problems getting along. Remember the old wives' tale about the children listening?

At a home where we were praying with a family , the 8-year-old said that her friends' Mom and Dad were fighting and hitting each other. This made the friend sad that it was happening, an d she had a tear. If you are experiencing some shouting matches, please do not do it in front of your children. They carry that emotional scar into adulthood.

Peace comes with an expectation of some effort on your part.

Let me give you a real-life experience of mine: I h ad a senior position at a company, and the President began to ridicule me and criticize my efforts without offering suggestions that would meet his approval. My first reaction was to quit. My second reaction was to argue. My third thought was that neither of the two reactions would solve the problem, and I wanted this position to work. I began to pray for the man. Oh, it was difficult at first, but then I found a rhythm, and when I could feel his attack coming on, I said a prayer for him. It took three months for his attitude toward me to change to a mentor relationship I cherish today. He died a few years after this, and I was glad I reconciled the relationship.

Let us look at some scripture for ideas.

Gospel Luke 6:36-38

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

"Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.

Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.

For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you."

This is Jesus telling me that I need to be merc iful. Mercy means showing or exercising mercy, including a generous helping of forgiveness. Forgiving someone who did something or said something to or about you is the first step in peace. Holding a grudge is painful and takes energy. In most cases, you are the one being hurt because you are angry. It is your gut that is being churned up, and not the other person's.

Some ideas to help in your forgiveness:

1. Can you shake it off and move on? The best way to move on is to pray for that person. If that does not work on Monday, repeat it on Tuesday until you come to peace with this person.

2. Can you meet that person face to face and discuss the issue calmly and in a manner that Jesus would approve of? A guy who was a joker made fun of another somewhat shy guy. The shy guy advised the joker that he no longer wanted to be the one who this joker made fun of all the time. At first, the Joker took that as a “game on” and began to ramp up the attack until the shy guy told the Joker that it was hurting his feelings, and he did this in front of other people in the office. The result was the office agreed that they also were tired of the joker’s picking on them.

3. Say someone cuts you off in traffic after an awful day at work. My first reaction was (past tense), and I cut him off. But a few years ago, I saw the reaction of a road rage encounter that ended with both new cars being totaled. Now, I let the offender go. Perhaps that person is trying to get to the hospital for a last moment with a loved one, or maybe this person is just dumb. Do not be dumber. Let the person go and pray for the rest of you in traffic with this aggressive driving. It is not worth the damage to your vehicle or your person to be disabled for life dealing with someone who has a death wish. Go, Greif; perhaps the car was stolen, and the offender has a gun. YIKES!

4. Same with a person who is passionate about being special today! They cut before you at the grocery store or fast-food place. I first state that a line forms behind me and smile calmly. Sometimes, the embarrassed person will say sorry they did not see it. Sometimes a bully will challenge me, saying, “So what!” I refuse to let bullies ruin my day, so I just smile back and invite the person to “go ahead.” If someone else tries to step in, I ask the person if it is worth fighting for, and I make a point of saying it loud enough for the person to hear. You come out on top because you did not engage in a confrontation. Remember that you are trying to stay in a state of peace. Remember, what would Jesus do?

Look at the Gospel of Luke again . Jesus is telling me to STOP judging and condemning and begin a new day by giving up the hostile attitude. Smile, and get smiles back. Make a friendly comment to a stranger and get one back.

May I also suggest you seek out a priest you know is a good counselor and talk about your serious issue? These guys experience many complex problems that make a person sad or bothered. Remember that God wants you and me to be happy, not sad or annoyed.

I find the FACT that God loves all of us the same, even the evilest person you can think of. That person may NOT get to heaven, but God still loves them. So, be nice to your brothers and sisters out there.

Sara and Charlie’s Lent Adventure with Nana and Papa

A Lenten Journey of Faith

Sara and Charlie were spending a long weekend with Nana and Papa while Mom and Dad took a trip for Dad’s work. This was normal, and the children looked forward to spending fun times with their grandparents, playing board games, going to movies, and maybe visiting the Ice Cream Palace for a sundae or two.

Lent was March 5, a Wednesday this year, meaning the Ice Cream Palace visits would quickly end on Tuesday. Sara was a very mature and wise 13-year-old, and Charlie was just a normal, healthy 8-year-old boy whose interests were baseball and video games.

Papa was reading the news on his tablet when Sara came in and sat across from him. Papa looked up, saying, “What up, Princess?”

“I’m not sure I understand that whole Lent thing. I can tell you I’m giving up Fig Newtons for Lent, but you and I both know that I don’t like Fig Newtons, so what is the purpose? And why would I give up something that has nothing to do with Jesus' pain and suffering on the cross? Shouldn’t it be enough that we feel bad that Jesus had to suffer so much before he died?”

“Now, that is several good questions, Princess!” Papa closed his tablet and took off his glasses. He looked at his granddaughter and asked, “Do you want a long or short response?”

Sara smiled, saying, “You will give a short answer that you know will drive me crazy because it is not a complete answer, so let’s just jump into the deep end of the pool, shall we?”

“Well then,” Papa exhaled, “let's swim.” Sara groaned.

Papa went on, “The Church gives us three topics to ponder during Lent. Each has a purpose, such as helping us to feel more comfortable with our relationship with God, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.”

“What happened to the Holy Spirit during Lent?”

“Well, Sara, what came first, God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit?”

“Oh, I guess God The Father, Jesus the Son, then the Holy Spirit?”

“A good, reasonable answer, but wrong. The Holy Spirit is mentioned all through the Old Testament. Even King David begged God to remove the Holy Spirit from him. Then, remember when Jesus was in the Desert, the Holy Spirit cared for Him after his 40 Days. And Jesus told His followers that the Holy Spirit would come over them. Sara, the Holy Spirit is God and Jesus together. The Trilogy is God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

“There are three practices the church asked us to accept during Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Prayer should be your conversation with Jesus. We all need to spend more time talking to Our Lord daily. So, Lent is the perfect time to promise Jesus that you will come to Him in prayer every day. This should be more than an Our Father. Jesus knows what is happening in your life and your mind. So, discuss this with Jesus. Ask him questions that will help you understand what is unclear to you. He will answer or provide Fr. Tom the message, who will give you the answer in his homily.”

“WAIT, how did Fr. Tom know what I was thinking? He won’t say, ‘And Sara was wondering why a certain boy keeps bugging her’ in Mass, would he? I would die of embarrassment!!”

Laughing, Papa tried to control the excited 13-year-old by saying, “No, Father won’t mention you by name, but maybe if you listen, he will give you the answers you are looking for by telling his stories during his homily.”

“So, if Jesus knows what is on my mind, why must I tell Him in prayer?”

“Ahhh, a question that many should be asking! Because as you say the prayer in words in your mind, you are forming a clearer picture of what you want answers to. Putting words to a thought helps with clarity. Then you have a better chance of getting some direction from Jesus or the Holy Spirit on how you should think about that boy who is……”

“No boy is bothering me, so let us just leave that one in the swamp where all boys belong, in the mud. So, I am still attending school during Lent and can’t go to church; how long should I pray?”

“Can you give Jesus 10 to 15 minutes at night before bed? Use this time to talk about your day, what bothered you, what made you laugh, what gave you happiness, and what made you mad. If you can find 30 minutes to talk to your friend after school, you should have the same conversation with Jesus!”

“Well, some of that talk with Angela is sort of girl talk; I’m not sure Jesus would like it.”

Papa responded, “Then you should not be saying it. If it hurts another person, that is a sin. If it is not true, that is a sin. If it makes fun of someone, that is also a sin. You must remember that God loves you and your friends all the same. If you think God should love you more, you need to talk with Fr. Tom in the Confessional. You are the same Child of God to God as that bully in 9th grade.”

After a pause, Papa continued, “So, prayer is just telling Jesus what is on your mind, and hopefully, it includes a healthy dose of Thank You for the health, happiness good fortune you have, with my Mom and Dad, Papa and Nana, and Charlie.”

“Papa, what if I’m just uncomfortable talking to Jesus.”

“Sara, Jesus knows everything you are thinking and even what you will think tomorrow. Give Him a chance to help you and get comfortable with what He knows. This is a lot like your mom knowing that you need to talk to her about girl stuff before you know you need to talk to her about girl stuff. Jesus knows you better than your mom, so don’t you think it is ok to talk to him?”

“Well, that is something to ponder, Papa! But what if I’m just not ready to talk to anyone about it because I don’t know how to put words to it?”

“Wow, Sara, you are smarter than the average kid! Then you can always say a whole Rosary for that day. And remember to have an Intercessory Prayer before each Decade, where you can pray for someone in need, someone who is not as well off as you and needs some help, someone who is sick, or someone who is a bully like the one we know.”

“Pray for the bully?”

“Oh yes, praying for those who need prayers, like those who are mean, the ones who like to pick on others, or the ones who just make your life miserable can help you , and help them at the same time….by praying for them, you are laying down your feelings about their bad habits, and in doing so, you get special favors from God called Graces, and they allow you to forgive that person.”

Sara was ready to change the subject and asked, “What about this Fasting thing? What if I'm not ready to give up my smartphone? I need it for homework assignments and ….”

Papa looked out the window to the snow falling and replied , “True fasting is about giving up a food you like, not a food you don’t like, such as broccoli. You know, on Fridays during Lent, we give up all meat and try to e at one less meal that day. Giving up your favorite food for Lent is a good way for you to remember that Jesus went 40 days without food. BUT Sara, remember that you don’t have to fast on Sunday’s during Lent. Sunday is a day to worship, allowing us to celebrate with our favorite foods. But, recall that fasting is a form of discipline. We put aside something we love like cookies to practice putting aside sin or any distraction that keeps us away from God.”

“That sounds easy, but I believe it is hard to do for over a month!” Sara was looking concerned.

“Look, Princess, you are not going to Hell if you take a cookie for lunch on Tuesday during school. You just commit yourself to trying harder next time. God and Jesus understand the hunger a 13-year-old has for cookies!”

“The last one is Almsgiving . We pray for this in the first three beads of the Rosary: Faith, Hope, and Charity. So, for you my dear, sharing your lunch with someone who forgot theirs at school would be an act of charity. Almsgiving can also be giving time to help Charlie with his math homework and do it with love and kindness. While you are very good at math, Charlie is very good at hitting baseballs, a skill you don’t have.

God gave each of us “gifts” that make us special, and He wants us to use these gifts to help others. Helping Charlie also makes Mom and Dad happy as they see you two getting along.

Almsgiving is what happens when your dad gives you or Charlie the envelope at Mass to put into the basket; he is sharing his wealth with others, and the church is helping with food or clothing.”

Sara bowed her head and said, “Is that all?”

Papa took her hand and kissed it, “Yes, that is just about all that Lent is.”

Sara wanted to know, “What about the Easter candy?”

“That is our celebration tradition to reward children who came through the 40 days of Lent with the intent to pay attention to Jesus and not the Easter Bunny!”

This Lent, plan to put Jesus ahead of the Easter bunny.

 Gather your family for a half hour of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by:

1. Saying a decade of the Holy Rosary

2. Praying for each other and family

3. Read Matthew, Chapter 26—the Passion. Take the time to explain it to your young children so they can experience the true meaning of Easter.

4. Have each person make a plan to give up a favorite food.

5. Discuss what you can do for a family member, a neighbor in need or the poor.

The Invitation Directly from Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ appeared to St. Margaret Mary between 1673 and 1675, and He gave her the 12 Promises . When you say the “Hail Holy Queen” at the end of your Rosary, you say , “Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.”

To fully understand the First Friday Devotion, we must look at the total Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our Catholic Church is governed and taught by the Holy Spirit, so the Church has approved and promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Church instituted the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which, over time, has grown to be celebrated as a solemnly with an octave (8 days) by the universal church after the Octave of Corpus Christi.

You all know that by the Original Sin of Adam and Eve, we lost the right to Heaven, and from the time of Adam and Eve, Heaven was closed. By the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, the Son of God became man.

Then Jesus came and devoted his entire life to the Redemption and restoration of the Human Race. Some of us think all men are saved, but this is untrue. While Jesus allowed himself to be sacrificed on the cross for all of us men, but only some of us will be saved. The gift He gave to us will only be experienced by those who cooperate with the graces of Redemption. We need to be attentive and obedient to the Sacraments we receive. In other words, if you are not doing your part, you MAY not be invited into Heaven.

Jesus and His Father created the Blessed Eucharist , His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, supernaturally put into the form of common bread and wine that becomes the Eucharist when the Priest Consecrates it during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. If you do not believe this, stop now and go research the Eucharistic Miracles recorded and reported so that you will believe. The Eucharist is actually the heart of Jesus, and that, my friends, is just a FACT.

In the 18th century, Jesus came to St. Margaret Mary and gave her the 12 Promises. His gift to you and I. The First Friday promise is in His 12th Promise.

The 12th Promise is:

The all-powerful love of My heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance: they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments: My Heart shall be their assured refuge at the Last hour.

What is understood is that to receive Holy Communion, you must have recently gone to Confession and be in a state of grace, with no mortal sins, like missing your Sunday Mass or Holy Days of Obligation.

We live in a time of abundance in many places in the world. We all have more food than we can eat, a comfortable place to live, at least one vehicle, health, and all the stuff we need or think we need. We were talking about teens today and birthday gifts. The teens we know have everything that they want the day after they want it, thanks to Amazon. I’m guessing that is true for you as well.

But most, if not almost everybody, really needs more Jesus . And what most, if not almost everybody, is saying is that they can’t find the time or desire to attend Mass. You have heard the reasons: it’s boring, and I’m not getting anything out of it, or I don’t like Father. Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary:

“Behold this Heart which has loved men so much that It spared no sacrifice, not even death, and annihilation, in order to testify to them Its love. And in return, I receive from the greater part of mankind only ingratitude, by reason of the contempt, irreverence, sacrilege, and coldness which they show Me in this Sacrament of Love. This I feel more keenly than all I endured in My Passion.”

2024 Re-Consecration of Holy Family Regional School!

“Jesus is the reason for HFRS!”

On August 30, 2001, Holy Family Regional School (HFRS) opened its doors, breathing new life into the historic St. Andrews grade school—once attended by Madonna herself.

This marked the beginning of a new chapter, as HFRS embraced a regional format that united St. Andrews, St. Irenaeus, and, later, St. Mary of the Hills. With 128 eager students enrolled, parents rejoiced at the return of a Catholic school to Rochester, ready to nurture both faith and education.

As the community flourished, however, it became clear that one building alone could not accommodate the growing needs. Recognizing the demand for more space and modern technology, the decision was made to establish a new campus. Generously, St. Mary of the Hills donated land for this expansion, leading to the creation of what is now affectionately known as the “South” campus, just a few miles away from the original “North” campus at St. Andrews.

Today, HFRS proudly stands as the largest K-8 Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Detroit, boasting an impressive enrollment of 850 students and a dedicated staff of 110. Both campuses have been outfitted with the latest educational technology, including smart boards and Chromebooks, ensuring that students have the tools they need to thrive. Daily religion classes and regular Mass at St. Andrews and St. Mary of the Hills keep the spirit of faith at the heart of the education.

Consecration

In 2016, a significant spiritual milestone was reached when HFRS consecrated both campuses to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This year, in 2024, the school re-consecrated its grounds , reaffirming that “Jesus is the reason for HFRS."

To accommodate the large number of students and guests, the re-consecration ceremony was split into two heartfelt events. The day began at the North Lower School, where blessings were offered for both the room images and the main image, followed by prayers. Fr. Brian and Fr. Joe then made their way through the school, blessing each room and every child and teacher, creating a warm sense of community and connection.

At the South Campus (grades 4-8), Fr. Stan from St. Mary of the Hills, Mr. Meyers, and Fr. Joe Horn processing from the church to the school with the blessed image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary Friday September 6, 2024.

The celebration continued at the South campus, with all students present to participate in the joyous occasion. Fr. Stan from St. Mary’s blessed the images in the church, and he and Fr. Joe continued the blessings of students and teachers throughout the classrooms.

Both younger students and upper-grade pupils relished the experience of being blessed by their priests. As for the teachers, the generous splash of Holy Water was a refreshing part of the day!

Men Making a Difference on a Saturday Morning

As we approach the pivotal election day on November 5th, Men of the Sacred Hearts are doing their part to bring awareness to how crucial it is for us to come together as a community to champion family, life, and Christian values.

Recently, Mike, Matt, David, and Don dedicated hours on their Saturday to a meaningful outreach initiative. They hand-wrote 400 personal Catholic Vote postcards to encourage and motivate potential Michigan voters.

Taking the Wheel at Dream Cruise 2024

The Dream Cruise was initially created to give the many people the opportunity to showcase their restored vehicles from the '50s and '60s. It has become a venue now for not only those vehicles but any vehicle that has been altered or created for show.

This year, the Men of the Sacred Heart revved up and showed up for the Cruise this past Aug 17, 2024 .

The Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica graciously offered their corner on 12 Mile and Woodward as the Catholic Corner where groups such as the Legion of Mary and the Men of the Sacred Hearts could showcase who they are and what they do for families.

We passed out our materials and the Lost without Him prayer card to the people on the sidewalk, much like a parade, but instead of us moving, the people were moving.

In the morning, the foot traffic was primarily families with younger children. As the day wore on, it seemingly became more party people.

Legion of Mary and St Paul Street evangelizers passed out rosaries and miraculous medals, and other various people such as the right to life were with us on the corner of 12 and Woodward. Which seems to be the epicenter of where the center of the action is.

I was surprised that there was a group of people in front of our tent on the grass from Cleveland and another group not far from them all the way from Columbus that came up for the event.

If you have never been to Dream Cruise, I can tell you that no vehicle seemed to have been without a noisy exhaust, burnouts or spinning tires. They were an absolute must, and the roar... close to painful. That said, the crowd was fun loving and quite enthusiastic about the vehicles that cruised by on Woodward.

For those not from the area, the dream Cruise recreates the '50s and '60s when cruising Woodward was a national pastime for young high school people!

They would take their souped-up cars out and try to dodge the police while they did drag racing and of course, socializing from car to car. There were drive-ins along 11 mi stretch, and you would go from drive-in to drive-in, hopping out of one car and hopping in another car to go cruising again . it was great fun for those of us that should have been at the library (like we told our parents we were!) but instead were having the time of our lives on Woodward!

This year's Dream Cruise was an amazing opportunity to integrate our faith into every day life, especially by bringing Our Lord and Our Lady into the heart of celebration and festivities.

Bringing Jesus to a Cheeseburger Crowd!

Wednesday, August 14, 2024, began warm and just got hotter. My partner Joe Bauer and I had work to do during the day, but we made the two-hour trip north to Caseville, Michigan (on the tip of the thumb) for the Cheeseburger Festival and parade that began at 5:00 PM Wednesday night(????).

We arrived and parked on the far east side of town, then walked the mile back to the west side, where the parade was going to begin. Did I say it was hot with no wind?

As we walked through town to join our hosts, Arrow Osborn from Waterville, Ohio, and America Needs Fatima from Saginaw , we noted that there were lots of spectator chairs set up along both sides of Main Street. We noted that many independent food trucks were making cheeseburgers and that there were maybe a zillion kids scooting about—well, maybe not a zillion, but lots of kids without the yoke of a parent raining them in.

As you can see from the photos, there were equal amounts of young parents and older parents, empty nesters, and old people caring for real old people who were out to have a darn good time.

There are two Dairy Queens in Caseville, and just about every child had one in there hands while the adults had a beer. It is a party town, and this was a big party with a parade.

The 5 PM parade started going around 5:30 PM. If you have ever marched in a parade, you know the standard start: slow, trot, and then run to keep up, followed by a stop.

We have a system: We hold the card up and let people see what it is. If they reach for it, we will help out and pass it to them.

We distributed 750 cards and ran out again towards the parade's end. I could not carry 1000 cards in my blue apron as the Jesus card is 4" X 6" is larger than the normal 3" x 5" card.

I was on one side of the street, and Joe was on the other. We both heard people saying how nice it was to have Our Lady of Fatima in the parade and us passing out Holy Cards.

Everyone was polite and civil towards us, despite our wearing very Catholic shirts.

The parade officials said there were 80,000 people in Caseville for the parade .

That, my friends, is lots of folks jammed into a small town on Saginaw Bay, Michigan. We are ultimately so thankful to God for the gift it was to bring Jesus to people in such a small but significant way.

Men of the Sacred Hearts promote devotion to the Sacred Heart 350 years after Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Saba Mona said it feels like there has been a special visitor in her home this past week. Ever since the Men of the Sacred Hearts enthroned her family’s Bloomfield Hills home on May 11, the 3-foot statue of Our Lady of Fatima has been stationed in the middle of the family room.

The statue’s presence is a reminder that this home has been entrusted to the care of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and every day, they have Mary, the Mother of God, present to hear the family’s intercessory prayers.

“Yesterday, I caught my husband sitting in the family room, praying to her,” Mona told Detroit Catholic. “I haven’t spotted the kids praying to her yet — they are in and out of the house all the time — but they do see her. She is in the family room, so you walk in and see her. If you walk through the hallway, you see her. Her presence is all around us, and she is watching us.”

The Mona home was enthroned by the Men of the Sacred Hearts, a lay apostolate of men who travel throughout Metro Detroit spreading their devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary and encouraging families to consecrate their homes.

The Men of the Sacred Hearts came to the Mona home on May 11. With the family gathered around the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, volunteers began by explaining the consecration, leading intercessory prayer and encouraging family members to lift their prayers to God.

“It was a very special day for us,” Mona said. “I really felt for my kids, especially my oldest, when seeing his prayer intentions. I felt he was in tune, and it touched all three of them and the way they gave all of their intentions at each mystery (of the rosary). You could tell they did feel the impression of Mother Mary.”

This year marks the 350th anniversary of the apparitions of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque of France, which included Jesus' call to promote devotion to His Sacred Heart and to make acts of reparation or penance for the times people have not recognized Christ’s love. The practice of having homes enthroned to the Sacred Heart was begun by Fr. Mateo Crawley-Boevey, SSCC, of Peru, who developed to a devotion to St. Margaret Mary and began enthroning homes in the early 1900s as a young boy in his hometown and in the early years of his priesthood.

Mateo Crawley-Boevey, SSCC, of Peru, was inspired to spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart and Sacred Heart home enthronements in the early 1900s after visiting the convent in France where St. Margaret Mary Alacoque of France lived.

Problems with tuberculosis caused Fr. Crawley-Boevey to leave Peru for a less dusty, higher-altitude climate, so he was sent to France, where he ventured to Paray-le-Monial, home to the convent of the Visitation Order where St. Margaret Mary was a cloistered nun.

As Fr. Crawley-Boevey was praying in the convent, he had a profound spiritual experience, explained David Tay, executive director for the Detroit-based Men of the Sacred Hearts.

“As he knelt down, praying in front of the very altar where Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary, a force came over him like a wind,” Tay told Detroit Catholic. “It almost knocked him to the ground. There is no wind in convents — the walls are three to four feet thick with stone. But it was the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave Fr. Mateo two messages: First, you’re cured. Second, the Holy Spirit wanted Fr. Mateo to go to the Vatican and seek Pope Pius X and tell him he was enthroning homes, business and schools to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”

Fr. Crawley-Boevey did meet the pope, who instructed him to spread the devotion to the Sacred Heart by enthroning homes. Fr. Crawley-Boevey did so, forming the Men of the Sacred Hearts to promote the devotion all over the world.

Fr. Crawley-Boevey's felt he wasn’t proficient enough in English, so he enlisted the help of a Montreal priest, Fr. Francis Larkin, to promote enthroning homes in North America.

St. Clair Shores businessman John LoVasco, who founded the Detroit chapter of the Men of the Sacred Hearts in 1964, was tasked by a Montreal priest, Fr. Francis Larkin, to find a statue of Our Lady of Fatima to stay in a family's home whenever a home was enthroned.

In 1964, Fr. Larkin was in Chicago promoting enthronements when he came into contact with John LoVasco, a businessman from St. Clair Shores. Fr. Larkin gave LoVasco the materials necessary to start a Detroit chapter of the Men of the Sacred Hearts.

The devotion and home enthronements didn’t take off initially, until Fr. Larkin suggested LoVasco purchase a statue of Our Lady of Fatima to place in the homes the group enthrones, encouraging families to pray to Mary for her intercession.

“John bought the statue, and sure enough people flocked to the statue, and it went off like gangbusters,” Tay said.

The apostolate's heydey was in the 1970s and '80s, Tay said, when close to 170 men would travel all over the Archdiocese of Detroit, visiting homes by invitation and leading enthronements to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Since its founding, the Detroit chapter has continued the practice to this day, encouraging families to pray with and for each other, entrusting their homes to the protection of Jesus Christ and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Volunteers with the Men of the Sacred Hearts lead prayers for the home enthronements, which are available to any family that wants one.

The consecration itself involves entrusting one's family to Jesus' protecting help, and trusting his Mother to intercede for the family's intentions.

“What it takes is you making the promise that Jesus is the head of your family, and in doing so, he is like the king of your family,” Tay said. “The image of the Sacred Hearts (featuring the exposed Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary) is put in a prominent place in your home. We encourage some daily prayer, a daily rosary or at least a decade of the rosary in order to perpetuate your prayer life and to get a deeper relationship with the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”

Anthony Fanelli joined the Men of the Sacred Hearts in 2009 at the urging of a friend after he disclosed his family was going through some challenges.

Fanelli worked in real estate, an industry that was suffering in the wake of the subprime mortgage crisis and subsequent recession of 2008. His daughter, a recent graduate from Loyola University, was having difficulties finding a job.

Fanelli invited the Men of the Sacred Hearts into the family's home for an enthronement, and he immediately discovered an inner peace.

“I discovered something I haven’t felt in a long time,” Fanelli said. “It was peaceful. We still had the same problems — we still were trying to get my daughter a job, still figuring out the financial challenges we were in — but when we had the Blessed Mother in the house, I was hooked."

Fanelli shortly after asked to join the Men of the Sacred Hearts, where he continued to volunteer leading home enthronements for other families.

During home enthronements, a statue of Our Lady of Fatima is installed in a family's home for two weeks, encouraging intercessory prayer together.

Fanelli said it’s a powerful experience walking into a stranger's home and watching the same peace he experienced wash over a family, who might be apprehensive at first.

“Since we’ve been going to all these houses, the common denominator is that no matter what issues people face, be it financial issues, health issues or just a need for someone to pray with them, is people say having the Blessed Mother with them is so very peaceful, ” Fanelli said.

“People begin sharing personal moments with you,” Fanelli added. “I always say we come in as strangers and leave as friends. After a couple of hours, we know more about them, and they know more about us. Some people aren’t sure what to expect when we come, but I often hear them talk about how this is really cool. And hopefully they spread the word.”

Saying the rosary out loud was a particularly powerful moment for the Mona family during their enthronement, especially when it was time to hear the prayer intentions of her three children and her husband, and having the chance to share her own intentions.

“My prayer intentions are always surrounding my family, especially for my three kids, for everyone to be happy and healthy, and I pray that the intentions of others are answered," Mona said. "My other intention was for the four men who delivered Mother Mary to us, that their intentions are answered.”

Saba Mona was particularly grateful her oldest son, Avery, was able to be with the family for the Sacred Heart enthronement after playing a college baseball game in Lansing the night prior.

The Mona family, who attend St. Thomas Chaldean Church in West Bloomfield and Holy Cross Chaldean Church in Farmington Hills, placed flowers around the statue of Mary as she resides in their home for two weeks, a reminder of the profound spiritual moment they shared and the power they experienced through intercessory prayer.

The Men of the Sacred Hearts encourage every member of the family to be present during a home enthronement. It was especially meaningful for Mona to have all three of her children — two are students at Wayne State University and her youngest will be a freshman at Brother Rice High School this fall — together for the enthronement with her and her husband.

“I can’t tell you how much that meant to me,” Mona said. “Especially with my son, who plays baseball at Wayne State, Mother Mary knew I wanted him to be there , and if it worked out, it worked out. But she knew that we wanted him there. She had his coach find a bus to get him here after their game on Friday night, to be with us on Saturday morning."

Mona said her hope is that the family finds more time to pray during the two weeks the statue will be in her home, and “to have Jesus’ light shine on them and build in belief each and every day; that was my hope for this.”

The Men of the Sacred Hearts leave behind an envelope and contact information for families to give out to others who might be interested in having the Sacred Heart of Jesus enthroned in their homes.

The statue of Our Lady of Fatima, along with enthronement materials brought by the Men of the Sacred Hearts, will remain in the Mona home during that time as a reminder of their commitment to prayer, as well as an encouragement to invite friends and family to strengthen their own prayer lives, Tay said.

“Many times families invite friends and family to come over and pray, and they too, have never experienced intercessory prayer and praying for one another out loud,” Tay said.

When that happens, it's not uncommon for the Men of the Sacred Hearts to get another call requesting a home enthronement, and the apostolate's work continues.

“The more people we have praying, the better,” Tay added.

A Story about Good over Evil

Satan is ecstatic. His plan is working as more and more people turn against each other...

Damien began gaining attention on social media and quickly gained astounding followers by preaching about God. Damien was a God-Hater.

He urged people to denounce God as a fraud. How could God allow natural disasters and climate change? What would God even think of suppressing the good people of the world under the authoritarian rule of conservative God-fearing people?

Fr. Joe was preaching about the crippled man at the pool of Bethesda. Fr. Joe was doing a good job of getting to the point that the crippled man needed to request Jesus to cure him, not get him into the pool. Unfortunately, many of the attendees at that Sunday Mass were not paying close attention to Fr. Joe, they were thinking of what they were going to do after Holy Mass.

Damien began to draw more followers with his anti-God rh etoric. People who were attending church but were not passionate about worshiping God began to drop out and listen to Damien’s podcasts while on their way to the beac h or other fun activity.

The Catholic church was feeling the decline , as were the Jewish, Protestant, and Muslim places of worship. People were beginning to argue about Damien’s claims against God and division was evident in families.

Satan was watching this with great interest as he created Damien to begin the divisions in families, churches, and other places of worship. Damien was also pushing one of Satan’s best programs of being prideful of who they were and what they had in material things.

Fr. Joe knew a Visionary called Art and asked Art what Blessed Mother was saying about Damien. Art told Fr. Joe that Mary, Mother of God was asking people to come back to Her Son, as He was the Truth.

Damien was now so rich with donations that he bought TV time and had a three-hour special program starring Damien and some of his helpers to show and tell how God was irrelevant. These helpers were to tell the viewers that they obtained fame and wealth due to their hard work and creative ways to gain power and riches. They preached to take what they could and as much as they could for their gain. The truth was that they were cheating the poorest and least able to defend themselves against powerful men with the “law” bought and paid for by Damien’s minions.

Satan was grinning with delight as families fell apart and church attendance fell to new lows.

Again, Fr. Joe asked Art to ask Blessed Mother for help. Art reported that Blessed Mother told him that Her Son was not pleased with how many of what were lukewarm followers had fallen away and denounced Him and His Father. Jesus warned that there was going to be an event that would further divide the people.

The lights and sound system in St. Peter's Catholic Church went out at 3 p.m. in the afternoon. Fr. Joe picked up the phone and hit #2 for his Administrator, but there was just a dead receiver. He called her, and she responded that the whole parish was without power, and the phones were dead.

The people with generators or battery-operated radios discovered that the electricity across the United States, Canada, and Mexico was out. No reason was given for the outage, and because they did not know why, they could not tell when it would come back on.

Slowly, the reality of what a gift electricity was began to sink into everyone’s mind. Most of our water comes from municipalities that pump the water from the source to the treatment facility and then out to the homes, businesses, and buildings. The backup generators will run for a given time until the stored propane or fuel set aside for these emergencies runs out.

Then, the water is no longer under pressure, and none comes out of the tap. Toilets won’t flush without water.

Many homes had standby generators, but they soon ran out of standby fuel. Now refrigerators and freezers are useless, and food is already in short supply.

Stores without electricity cannot operate, cash registers need juice to run, and the stores cooling systems for cold and frozen foods become useless as their standby supply of fuel runs out.

Many city dwellers realize that their toilets are backing up because the pumps are not moving the wastewater to the treatment facility.

Vehicles run out of fuel (gas or electric) and sit dead.

Homes have no lights, no heat or air conditioning. People who are on some medical equipment begin to die as standby sources of fuel run out.

There is no reason to go to work as there is no way to transport or make the goods. The economy has hit a brick wall, and people are now desperate.

Satan is ecstatic. His plan is working as more and more people turn against each other. Stealing and mobs swarming over anyone hoarding water or canned food are sought out. No one is safe or has any means of hope for tomorrow.

Art rode his bike to see Fr. Joe at the rectory. Art said the Blessed Mother told him that Her Son wants everyone to pray for Jesus to help them.

Fr. Joe sighed and said, “How, Arrow, no one is here but a few faithful in front of the Tabernacle. How can I get to most people without help from the media and electronics!”

Arrow said that Fr. Joe must not lose faith . Begin with one and have the one tell another so there are two. Two become four, and so on.

So, Fr. Joe gathers his faithful and tells them the good news from Arrow, that Jesus is asking for prayer to help all the people. Fr. Joe’s faithful go out and tell others they know are loyal, and soon there are many praying for help.

Now Damien and his minions are living fat and happy as they have stored enough of everything they need. Damien has no platform to preach from as all electric devices lay dead without power. But Satan advises Damien to get out and speak up against the hope that some of the people are preaching about, or their cause will die. Satan has North America on the ropes at this point with no food, water, or hope.

As the word of the few faithful began to spread like wildfire, churches and places of worship began to reopen, and people flocked in for group prayer and worship. The religious leaders began instructing the people to ask for forgiveness and the Catholics to confess.

Satan is now in a state of shock at how fast people are abandoning his false promises of hate, ego, and pride. Material wealth is worthless when you are thirsty and hungry. Hope begins to spread wildfire, and people are starting to share whatever they have with those who have nothing.

Religious leaders from the Christian, Muslim and other denominations pass the word about instructing the faithful to worship God and pray for those who are leading them astray.

Jesus sees that there is genuine sorrow for walking away from Him and tells His Mother that the time has come to fix the electric problem.

Blessed Mother tells Art that Her Son will turn on the electricity that Satan turned off. Arrow tells the religious leaders who pass the word to all their people who have returned to their faith. This is all done by word of mouth from home to home.

Electricity comes back on after 90 days of being out. Some wisest men and women remark on how fast a civilized society can crumble to chaos and hate.

After three months of electricity returning, factories are running, food is being processed, and life is returning to normal.

Church attendance has been overwhelming, and many younger religious leaders were pushing to have the places of worship enlarged to accommodate the crowds. But wise, older members suggested that we should wait to see if attendance holds.

Six months after the return of electric power, normal is back in full swing. Attendance of religious service begins to wane and fall off with the older generation.

However, Fr. Joe and others see a difference as the younger generation brings their friends to church. The number of men applying to the Seminary has maxed out the space to house and teach the new seminarians. Young faithful with husbands and children are fulling the pews and are engaged in the faith.

Parents of school-age children are suggesting changes to the parish's religious education programs. They would like to see more Bible studies and the history of our religion replace coloring and pasting projects.

The younger faithful are not going to let Satan put us in harm's way again in their lifetime.

Note: I was walking on a beautiful July 19, 2024, day, looking at the blue sky and green trees and listening to the birds. I was thankful for all that God gave me: a wonderful best friend and wife, children, home, food, and safety. Then, as I walked along, I began to think how Satan could take it away, and the story above was created.

However, those who lived through the four days without electricity during the Northeast Power Outage on Thursday, August 14, 2003, which even took out much of Canada, know how quickly no electricity can create a problem. Now think about 90 days without power!

Say a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has given you and I.

Mid-Year Reflections:

Jesus’ time has not yet come, and His Mother asks Him to help friends because they ran out of wine at their wedding in Canna. He told His Mother in a curt response, “Woman, why do you involve me?” He continues, “My hour has not yet come.” Mom tells the servants to “Do whatever He tells you.”

The servants filled six water jugs containing 25 to 30 gallons. Jesus did not touch, wink, or say anything; he just then told the servants to take a sample to the Master of the Banquet, who tasted it and proclaimed that it was perfect.

I have several thoughts on this. My first thought was that Jesus was converting his hot, stale water from wells to fine wine, while the disciples were sucking down nasty warm water (not really). I’m sure I would have tested the wine converted from water to be sure it was drinkable. I am guessing that this was Jesus' first shot at making wine from water. Do you suppose He made more later in His Ministry?

Oh, and notice that this 30-year-old Jewish boy obeyed His Mother and made the wine. Therefore, I ask the Blessed Mother to hear my prayers and take them to Jesus for me. We assume that Jesus always did what His Mother asked Him to do (unlike my history with my own dear, departed Mom).

Did you catch that in most cases, people asked Jesus for His Help because they had FAITH that HE could help them? The two times that I recall from the Gospels that Jesus was not able to perform any miracles were in His hometown because everyone knew Him as the carpenter or “Mary’s son.” This is remarkably interesting because, at that time, Jesus would have been referred to as Joseph’s son. It was disrespectful to label him as Mary’s son. The second time was the Gospel, where the man possessed by “legions of demons” was cured, but the townspeople asked Jesus to leave after he sent the demons into the town's swine flock, and they jumped off a ledge and died in the sea.

In today’s culture, it is not unusual to find many people who do not believe that Jesus Christ can and is still working miracles to this day. So few of us say “Thank You” on a daily basis for the roof over our heads, the bed we slept in, the bathroom (!!!!), the food we eat, the car we drive, the job we hold, and the family we have. Oh, did I mention our health? Even if you are extremely ill, you have yet another day to make amends to those who love you.

I have a lady who I know who is comfortable taking potshots at me or my wife because of our Catholic Faith. And then, when her cat (for example) is lost, who does she call for prayers?

I have another friend who was like my brother a few years ago. We sailed the Great Lakes and even raced the Annual Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Classic sailboat race through the edge of a hurricane. I love this guy, and we still see each other. When I tell him I am praying for him, he says, “Thanks,” and hangs up. He is a fallen-away Catholic, raised in the faith as a young lad. I believe he fears becoming faithful as it will change his lifestyle. There is no time for God in his “me” agendas. How about you?

Are you thankful for your life? Almost every adult in America is responsible for their place in life. Most of our parents did not make us go into the company business (farming or shopkeeper), and we could choose our path. How I wish I had made wiser changes in my carefree youth, and I’m guessing you feel the same way.

But here we are. I have become comfortable being called to stand before a congregation and tell the stories of The Men of the Sacred Hearts. I chase down friends from Mass or on the golf course and ask them to consider Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Some say yes, and some say no. It is an invitation, and I do not judge those who say no. I say “no” to many invitations to attend events that I’m just not excited about. It is not a judgment on the event; it is that I can only do so much at my age before I begin to make mistakes.

So, back to the question “How about you?” Would Jesus be happy with your behavior and the way you evangelize? Remember, even Jesus could not evangelize in his hometown and family. I’m guessing He will not hold that against you. But if your neighbor or friend is making noises about what happens at Mass, invite the person to Mass. Your co-worker is asking pointed questions about why you worship Blessed Mother, you can answer that we have not, and will not worship Her, but yes give HONOR to Mary as she is the Mother of God. See, you can evangelize with just the smallest seed. Like the mustard seed, it will grow. Just taking the time to talk to a friend or even a stranger can be a way to evangelize, especially if that person is a lonely senior citizen. If you are shy, this is a good way to stretch out and ask how a person can make a good salad or sauce from tomatoes. You could be a master chief, but you're not teaching, you are opening a door for a conversation. Try it. It’s fun.

Last comment: It is 2024, and the election cycle is warming up. I am at peace and am not angry because I do not listen to the news. No news is going to change my mind about abortion or our southern border. Try it. Just turn it off and, as the man said, be happy.

Fish Fly Bay Rama Parade 2024

Good News!

The Men of the Sacred Hearts were invited to participate in the annual Fish-Fly (yes, this is an insect) Bay-Rama parade on June 23, 2024, in New Baltimore, Michigan. We were joining the World Apostolate of Fatima- Diocese of Saginaw Michigan. Our group was going to carry Our Lady of Fatima and pass out rosaries. Joe Bauer and I (in red shirts on the left) were going to pass out Prayer for our Country Holy Cards.

51 groups were marching in this one-mile parade down the main drag. I was shocked at how many people showed up, truly an inspiration. We were #29 in the parade, there were over 25 people plus The Knights of Columbus Color Guard carrying “Pray the Rosary” signs, passing out rosaries, and praying the rosary as they walked along on this HOT HUMID day.

We were the only Catholic group marching and passing out our rosaries and Pray for our Country cards.

As Joe and I walked the sidelines of the parade to pass out our Pray for our Country Cards, we would offer the card so that someone had to reach and take it. This is Blessed Mother on the card.

We brought 500 cards thinking that we would bring back 400 cards to the office. WRONG! We ran out of cards ¾ of the parade route. There was one of the Knights's wife taking photos of us, and look what she was capturing as Our Lady of Fatima walked by.

I had 4 men refuse with a polite head shake the Prayer for our Country card. Some women just did not reach for it, but it was a non-hostile action. I would guess that 90% of the adults and older teens reached out and took the card.

I see that as a positive sign.

A major secular news outlet this week examined the increase in young American Catholics who are returning to traditional Catholicism and following

Church teaching on issues such as abortion, contraception, the reality of sin, and the need for grace.

The Associated Press published “‘A step back in time’: America’s Catholic Church seesan immense shift toward the old ways,” by Tim Sullivan on May 1.

“Across the U.S., the Catholic Church is undergoing an immense shift,” Sullivan wrote: Generations of Catholics who embraced the modernizing tide sparked in the 1960s by Vatican II are increasingly giving way to religious conservatives who believe the church has been twisted by change, with the promise of eternal salvation replaced by guitar Masses, parish food pantries and casual indifference to church doctrine.

Parishes with more traditional priests often hear homilies that focus on heavier topics, such as the importance of the sacrament of Confession and avoiding spiritual dangers, Sullivan highlighted. Many young lay Catholics are welcoming of the changes in these parishes, as they increasingly desire tradition and orthodoxy.

“But the movement, whether called conservative or orthodox or traditionalist or

authentic, can be hard to define,” Sullivan wrote, noting that there is a wide range of people who are a part of the movement.

Although this movement of Catholics remains a minority in the states, “the changes they have brought are impossible to miss,” Sullivan wrote.

“They often stand out in the pews, with the men in ties and the women sometimes with the lace head coverings that all but disappeared from American churches more than 50 years ago,” he continued: Often, at least a couple families will arrive with four, five or even more children, signaling their adherence to the church’s ban on contraception, which most American Catholics have long casually ignored.

They attend confession regularly and adhere strictly to church teachings. Many yearn for Masses that echo with medieval traditions – more Latin, more incense more Gregorian chants.

Sullivan posited that the changes may have started when Pope John Paul II visited the US in 1993 for World Youth Day. Addressing the crowds of young people

during the visit, he said that Catholics “are in danger of losing their faith.”

Pope John Paul II condemned abortion, drug use, and “sexual disorders,” Sullivan

wrote, continuing: “Across the nation, fervent young Catholics listened.”

Over time, many college campuses began featuring Newman Centers, which offer a space for Catholic students to gather and meet. As these centers grew in popularity, so did FOCUS, or “Fellowship of Catholic University Students.” FOCUS missionaries serve college campuses by sharing about the Catholic Faith with students, leading Bible studies, and hosting events.

Sullivan spotlighted the climate at Benedictine College, a traditional Catholic college in Atchinson, Kansas. The college has rules for its students that may strike many as “precepts of a bygone age,” Sullivan noted: “Pornography, premarital sex and sunbathing in swimsuits are forbidden.” However, the school’s popularity has continued to increase, with student enrollment nearly doubling in the last 20 years.

Benedictine’s campus “might be a window into the future of the Catholic Church in America,” Sullivan highlighted. “In a deeply secular America, where an ever-churning culture provides few absolute answers, Benedictine offers the reassurance of clarity.” Many of the students are enthusiastic about the 13-century writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, praying late at night, following Church teaching on chastity, and attending Mass, Sullivan observed.

“Then there’s the priesthood,” he wrote. “Young priests driven by liberal politics and

progressive theology, so common in the 1960s and 70s, have ‘all but vanished,’ said a 2023 report from The Catholic Project at Catholic University, based on a survey of more than 3,500 priests.” Report: Liberal Priests Going Extinct <<

Traditional priests have brought some of the described orthodox changes to their

assigned parishes. Longtime parishioners’ reactions to these changes have been

varied, Sullivan found. He spoke with parishioners of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Madison, Wisconsin, who have witnessed such changes after a new priest, Fr. Scott Emerson, became pastor in 2021. "Parishioners watched – some pleased, some uneasily – as their spiritual home was remodeled. There was more incense, more Latin, more talk of sin and confession,”

Sullivan wrote. “Emerson’s sermons are not all fire-and-brimstone. He speaks often

about forgiveness and compassion. But his tone shocked many longtime parishioners.” The parishioners noticed that priests around the church wore their cassocks more often, and in the place of contemporary hymns was music more likely written in the medieval ages. “It was like a step back in time,” an anonymous parishioner told Sullivan. The changes are perhaps the cause for the decrease in Sunday Mass attendance at the parish, and for the simultaneous increase in attendance at the 6:30 a.m. Friday Mass. Sullivan noted that donations and parish school enrollment have also decreased in recent years. “But Emerson insists the Catholic Church’s critics will be proven wrong,” Sullivan wrote, concluding with a quote from the priest: “How many have laughed at the church, announcing that she was passé, that her days were over and that they would bury her?” [Fr. Emerson] said in a 2021 Mass. “The church,” he said, “has buried every one of her undertakers.”

What Did Jesus Say About First Friday?

Of the 12 Promises Jesus gave to St. Margaret Mary, the 12 ^th one was perhaps the most important to you and your family. Jesus gave the 12 Promises to St. Margaret Mary between 1673 and 1675. Life was not so good for the common people as the rapidly growing population was sapping the ability of the county to produce enough food for the people (if you were rich, you probably did not notice).

The First Friday Devotion is also referred to as the “Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus” for our sins against Jesus and His Sacred Heart.

The 12th Promise was:

"The all-powerful love of My Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments; My Heart shall be their assured refuge at the last hour."

Let us just take a brief look at what Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary in 1673-1675.

1. “The all-powerful love of My Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion….”

a. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that “Anyone aware of having sinned mortally must not receive Communion without having received absolution in the sacrament of penance”(Confession). If you truly forgot to go to Mass then it is not considered a mortal sin. But if you decided not to attend Mas, that requires a trip to your friendly and loving priest.

b. The Catholic Church still considers it a mortal sin to miss Mass on a day of obligation without good cause. So, to receive the 12 ^th Promise, it is suggested you go to Confession and unload all your sins for absolution. Look at the benefits, “the grace of final repentance”. You should be looking for ways to live in a manor that pleases Jesus, not giving Him reason to judge you harshly.

2. “on the First Friday of nine consecutive months” , that is nine First Fridays in a row. As I told my friend, if you miss the 7 ^th first Friday of your 9-month program to receive Communion on the First Friday of each month, you need to begin again. Don’t be discouraged, just make it happen and put it on your calendar.

3. “the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments; My Heart shall be their assured refuge at the last hour”. Jesus is offering you to “grace of final repentance” or turning away from sin and dedicating oneself to the amendment of one's life.

Jesus is not hanging over us to look for opportunities to punish us. He has given his life to save you from sin and hell. Recall what he said to the woman caught in the act of adultery, “Neither do I condemn you, Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”

Give Jesus a chance to forgive you.

The Importance of Baptism

Many young parents from Catholic families and upbringing have been deceived by Satan about the importance of Baptism of children and adults. I’m surprised at the number who profess that it is not important or necessary to get into Heaven.

Catechism of the Catholic Church (1272) states: “Incorporated into Christ by Baptism, the person baptized is configured to Christ. Baptism seal the Christian with the indelible spiritual mark (character) of his belonging to Christ. No sin can erase this mark, even if sin prevents Baptism from bearing fruits of salvation.”

The Men of the Sacred Hearts receives many prayer intentions such as this on from December 13, 2023: “That our Daughter-in-law and grandchildren will be baptized.”

A consecrated woman whom I know shared with me this true story.

A woman (Abby, not her real name) who was from a broken and toxic family found herself pregnant at an inconvenient time. She was counseled by my friend at an abortion clinic on 6 Mile in Detroit MI and was turned around and had the baby. My consecrated friend stayed close to Abby who had older children as well out of wedlock and the new baby, and slowly began to lead this woman and her family to Jesus and His Mother. At this time, they had a basic understanding of Jesus and Blessed Mother.

Abby called my friend early one morning and told her that she had what she thought was a dream where Jesus appeared to her and told her “I cannot save you if you won’t let me”. He was talking about Abby getting baptized.

Those who believe will understand that yes, Jesus would come to a sinner and talk to her in a dream. The Bible is full of accounts where God talks to people in dreams.

I heard someone say, “Baptism is painless and makes getting to the Banquet quicker than the whole Purgatory thing.” The Banquet with the richest food and juiciest wines are waiting for some of us in Heaven.

You roll out of bed, brew a cup of coffee, flop down in front of the TV, and turn on the news. You hear the most horrific accounts of a brutal murder 10 miles from your home, children being blown up in a war somewhere on another continent, taxes going up, services being cut and a new pandemic is on the way.

Or, tomorrow you roll out of bed, brew a cup of coffee, flop down in your easy chair be begin to pray.

Much better way to begin the day, since you can not do anything to change the news. You and I are pawns being manipulated by our government. Like sheep, we can be locked down, forbidden from going to church, locked out of our checking accounts, and denied access to the medical care we want. We all know that our Smartphone is listening to us, and who knows who is using that information for what purpose?

But no one, no government, and no electronic device can prevent you from praying. You and Jesus can converse about the positive things you have in your life. And, you can ask Blessed Mother to lay your petitions and intentions for what you don’t have at Her Son’s feet for consideration. Jesus gives one of three responses, yes, no, or not now.

One of the best prayers you can say alone or in a group is the Holy Rosary. You can go to firstJesus.org for instructions on how to say the Rosary. It takes 20 minutes and you will find that if you focus on what you saying, you will be at peace with you are done.

One of the best ways to stay focused on the Rosary is to use a prayer intention for each decade or each Hail Mary you say. There are 10 Hail Mary’s in one Decade, so you could have 10 people or things to pray for in the first Decade (there is five Decades in one complete Rosery).

Let us take a quick look at what you can pray for.

Your home, your warm bed, your ability to make your home clean and safe, your food, and the ability to go buy anything good for you or not good for you that you want. Your bathroom with a shower and clean water. Many if not most people in the world have neither. Your health, or your access to health care. Knowing that eating the right thing is better for your long-term health than most of the food offered by the store, you have the freedom to choose your diet. Your marriage and your children. Knowing that you choose to be happy or unhappy in your sacramental union.

I have found that saying a prayer of thanks at the beginning of the day improves my attitude. It also helps me start each day happy. Happy people tend to project a positive happy attitude towards other people. If is raining and you hold the door for someone, saying something like “I sure wish it would rain” with a smile on your face brightens their day.

I avoid getting into discussions, debates, or arguments on politics, government actions, other people's problems, and the shortcomings of those in any position of authority over me. Go find someone who wants to talk about the Gospel Readings for that day, or better yet find someone to read the Gospel Readings with that day. Review Bishop Robert Barron’s Daily Gospel Reflection for a short thought-provoking reflection, or go to the Daily Reading at Laudate and review their Reflections for a more in-depth understanding of the Gospel. You can do this alone or with friends. You can even be bold and invite anyone to join you in quiet reflections on the Gospel for the day instead of taking your break beating up someone in government, business, or a customer.

Tomorrow, you can begin a more peaceful life. Be happy. Be at peace with Jesus.
