My priest caught me this morning and shared the heartbreaking news of a young person from a good Catholic family who had died by suicide. My friend, a priest, was visibly hurting. Once again, he was grieving the loss of a young life. Despite his sorrow, he still had to stand before his congregation that morning and deliver his homily. The loss of one child reaches far beyond the immediate family. It affects parents, siblings, friends, classmates, parish communities, and everyone who loved that young person. I know this is a difficult subject, and I feel strongly about it: We must do more to recognize the warning signs, reach our children, and prevent these tragedies whenever possible. Please don't assume it couldn't happen in your family. Be informed. Be attentive. Be prepared.
